Tricked out GBC

Post by AlonT »

You will notice that all the work I've done so far was mainly on the case. This is because I bought a broken GBC, just to study the circuits and everything I need to know about it.

I threw away the screen protector because I'm going to use a better one.
I cleaned the case with acetone, then sanded down all the words which were on the case; start/select, EXT, Comm. I also removed the port which lets you play the gameboy off wall power and filled in the hole with bondo.

Anyone who has played the gameboy color can tell you that it is hard to see the game you are playing, as the screen is not lit in anyway. I had a broken Gameboy SP screen around and decided to crack it open and look inside. I found this light panel:

I had to sand down the GBC so it would fit. (It has been sanded and looks nice now) 8)

I filled up the area where the volume scroll button was with bondo and ABS cement.
I put primer on the bottom half of the case to see if there were any holes or gaps in my bondo work.
I then sanded the case to make it ready for painting.

You could just upload them to imageshack which'll generate thumbnails automatically.

I'm curious, why are you filling in some of the exterior holes (like DC in)? I'm going to be doing the screen light mod myself once I get my tri-wing screwdriver to finally arrive.

Well i filled in the hole on the bottom because I will be removing that port and putting in a second crystal oscillator there.
And i filled in the area where the volume control was because I will be replacing that scrolling thing with two buttons which will be more comfortably on the back of the unit.

I love custom gameboys! are you going to have a switch to go between the two crystals or are you somehow going to incorporate a potentiometer to have variable controll?

I will have a switch where the EXT port used to be.
It will be used to switch between normal speed and around 2X or 1.5X speed.

Pretty interesting. I've always loved the form factor of the GBC since it has that surprisingly ergonomic hump in the back, but it's a bit off-putting how there's no backlight.

Funny that you say that.
At the top of that hump I will be putting the buttons that control the volume

Looks great so far good luck on your project! Maybe you could write a comprehensive guide when your done in the future. I would like to do something like this, and would love for you to share your knowledge with the less ambitous like myself. Looks great so far, much better than some the Dreamcast mods that have popped up here.
