Anyone still in to arcades?

Post by Espio 1919 »

I normally don't because there aren't many around here, but I was at the University (for some seminar about making the transition from High School to university) and I decided to scope out the on campus arcade. After seeing their fighters selection (Tekken 5, SF3: 3rd Strike, CvS2, MvC2, MSHvSF, KoF '99) in the facility I may try to get out there when I have time in between classes and work. So anyone else make the trek now and then to play some of this stuff?

My local arcade use to be awesome, back in the 90s. But now it is all DDR and other big dollar games. Nary a 2d game in sight, sans the Ms Pacman/Galaga Anniversary machine.

Finding good ones is the hard part. I'll still blow a few dollars in a good arcade when I stumble upon one.
The one here in town has a few good games (I'll spend some quarters on Daytona USA on occasion).

I think the most frustrating thing for me is the number of machines that aren't maintained (bad controls or screens) and machines that eat quarters.

Ya, these machines look to be in decent shape, but I can see they are somewhat ignored since the facility also contains a few pool tables and a 30 PC LAN center. At least the fighters are reasonable for prices (they're all at most 50 cents/play). This would be fun to go to now and then to get to know some people at school, but I'm still set on getting the DC versions of MvC2, 3rd Strike and CvS2 so I can practice at home.

9 out of 10 are crap games that cost $1, and crappier games for 50 cents. :( The atmosphere sucks too, I can't explain it really but they are like souless teeny bopper pits of annoying kids and nonsense shit. I miss Fun Time USA that got blown away in the hurricane!

I have loads of arcades down the sea front near where I live, but there mainly filled up with Dancing and light gun games.

The Trocadero(?) in London is fun to visit though. They have a little section dedicated to fighters on those great 2-player linked cabinets.

If arcades are gonna be big again, though, things need to change. No more seedy dark rooms, and no more stupid prices (some games are £2 a go, and you need one of those go's sometimes just to figure out how the game works!). Maybe something where you pay so much an hour to go in, and all the machines have a start button instead of a coin slot. They have a set up like this in Florida for the Disney Quest place in Downtown Disney, although that place is still pretty dark, and it can be difficult actually getting on anything because of how many people go there!

Arcades seem to be dead around here. Have been for years. I have great memories of going to an arcade at the local mall when I was a kid. Barrel of Fun it was called, and the entrance was a large barrel. As a kid I went for the arcade games and Skeeball (earned enough tickets for a great stuffed animal bee), but in high school the arcade scene revived for air hockey.

The last time I was in an arcade was last year at E3. At the end of the week the AMN staff went to party at Universal Citywalk, and one of the places we hit was one of those "dinner and games" arcades. We didn't play anything except air hockey though. Man, I do love air hockey.

MattG! Nice to have you in the forums! (thanks for the link yesterday, BTW )

I forgot to mention earlier that last weekend I went to Cedar Point and spent some time in their awesome arcade there. They still have my favorite 6-player widescreen X-Men game there:

It was really cool since there was four of us playing it at once and I got quite far on one quarter (I think it gave us like 5 lives to start with!) I think I had more fun on that than any roller coaster there ;)
