Type64, Portable N64 (65% done)

Post by DNT 2.5 »

So this is the work-log of my stylized n64. I plan on using typewriter keys as buttons, for the c buttons I will use ULRD and th A and B buttons will also be from the same typewriter. The Z and R triggers will be the two space keys . I plan on frankencasing an AG-85 from polycase.com. I also plan on making a faceplate out of model aircraft brass.

*Fixed the errors, and changed the name of the portable, I wasn't getting a "Steampunk" feel from it, however the name will remain Steam64 because, It is MINE and not YOURS.*
*Changed the name YET again, I hope this will be the last time...*

*Updates for great justice*

Sounds like this will be interesting to get typewriter keys into a controller working confortably, but I love steampunk mods. Can't wait to see some work.

I do believe this thread is going to be where he posts his progress. If he decides to go through with the project that is. Im sure we can all understand how alot of projects never make it past the idea stage...

Sorry I missed some points in the first post, I was a little rushed to catch the bus, but yes, I have made this thread to organize my ideas and get advice on the project. As for the controller I have a pretty solid idea for the buttons but that is a secret 8) I want this project to be original.

Current Status: Getting A job and money to pay for materials.

Good, nice to see you are starting the project.

You know DNT, if you need any advice or help, feel free to shoot me a PM if you wish!

Interesting idea with the keys, perhaps an illustration?

Well, I just found out the measurements from the N64 board, it seems to be 6 1/4" across, and 5" up and down, With some minor trimming the motherboard should be able to fit in an AG-85 case. I need to get some white paint and a very fine hair paintbrush and touch up the letters on some of the keys, I tried putting the large space keys on the back of the portable for the Z and R triggers and the dip in the key seems to fit in my finger quite well, I am defiantly using the typewriter keys, they are very comfortable. As for heat I plan on making my own copper heatsink that runs the perimeter of the case, Because everything will be so crammed I will have the Fan from a mutilated Dreamcast and the original N64 case fan one pulling air in, one pushing air out. batteries are a problem, I am most likely going to have to extend the back of the case out a little bit to make up for the batteries and cartridge slot. For batteries I am going to use two 7.4 volt 4000Mah Li-ion Batteries This one http://www.batteryspace.com/li-ion18650 ... arger.aspx and for the second battery (the same - smart charger) http://www.batteryspace.com/li-ion18650 ... thpcb.aspx
Oh and, I got a jorb!

I know some people say you don't need a fan for the N64, but the reality is you do as the system gets rather warm otherwise from a build up of heat. Some people who have made an N64p before without one have tended to change their mind later and put a small fan in. Good!

In saying that, you only need one fan, air intake can be from the small gaps around the relocated cart slot hole. You can have air sucked in or out by a fan, better in my view to have air sucked out (removing heat) on an N64 as it doesn't get that hot really on a general basis, after all, sucking air out means you aren't sucking in dust!

Although the DC fan is great, you can get far flatter ones from old graphics cards, etc; or just smaller fans in general; you want a quiet one, 20-30mm is fine if you can get one.

As mentioned in my PM, assuming everything stays working on my DC project and I get it finished, my next project will be N64 as there are a few members here who are looking to make their own portables from the guides - my WIP will be done probably entirely by videos...
