FF Tactics Advance question

Post by noiseredux »

I'm about 4 hrs into FF Tactics Advance, and I think it's amazing. It's incredibly addicting and makes you use yr head. Great game.

That being said, I don't have the manual (yet... it's on its way). So I have maybe a silly question (bear in mind, I've never played a FF Tactics title). Right now I have 2 Black Mages in my party, but for some reason neither of them can use their Black Magic. And I can't figure out what weapons I could possibly equip them with that would do any damage in a fight. So how do I get them to use their Black Magic? Do they need to level up or something? And if so, how can they level up if their fight attacks only do like 1-3 pts of damage to an enemy?

And please don't tell me to just not use a Black Mage... they're so badass looking. :)

I'll check the manual later, but I think you need to equip the Rod. Furthermore, I believe that you need to equip a weapon to learn an ability and that weapon needs to be equiped until that ability is fully "learned", then you can equip another weapon to learn a new ability. Perhaps the select button when highlighting the weapon in the "equip" screen will pull up each weapon's unique ability. Hope that helps for now....

Luckily I should have the manual later in the week thanks to a fellow Rackateer. But hopefully the Rod will work, cuz I'm tired of my Black Mages not being able to do anything in battle.

Yeah I did the same thing when I played tactics advanced the first time. This is what really turned me off on that game (granted I still beat it and put shit tons of hours into it). I was really hoping for the original with new classes. How do you like the "law" system they put in the game?

I actually think the Law System is a rather interesting touch. And it makes for some very randomly interesting battles. Like I had one battle where I could not use Fight command at all. So all the sudden my 2 characters with Black Magic were the shiz, and my other characters were basically defending those 2. Keeps it interesting I think. I guess that's what I like so much about this game, it's very much a puzzle game.

Yeah, I was right. You need to equip weapons and learn the abilities by earning AP. To see how far along you are to learning a new ability, go to the "Pick Abilities" menu in the Party Menu and press the R button. Also, when equipping a weapon, press the R button to view what abilities the weapon provides. Keep in mind what job your character is and what weapons that character can learn. Some weapons can offer different abilities depending on the job of the character.

Yes, the Rod should give you Lightning in the least. It may also give you Fire and Ice IIRC.

Yeah, its one thing that I wasn't a big fan of (+ the storyline) for FFT:Advance, you only learn new skills by equipping weapons, armor, and helms. And you need to master a certain number of ability skills before you can move on to other jobs.

Definitely hold on to the rod and master the skills, as it grants you 3 abilities at once! Otherwise, better weapons will have only one abilities and longer to master. When there is only one law card in affect, you're not going to fuss about it. But boy, once it goes to two law cards in affect and more, you are to going to be pissed on some missions!
