Buying a SNES

Most clones are composite video only. With a real SNES you can get an S-video cable (same cable for SNES/N64/GC) which looks excellent.

Get a mini snes (chances are it isnt discolored). i've had mine since realease date and it still works perfecty. I've seen them at my local Good Will for only $5

The SNES mini is great, but you apparently can't modify it to make it region free. So if that is something you care about, go with the original model. But definitely go with a Nintendo system over one of the clones.

The retro duo is good for snes games, it has a great compatibility rate, also plays pal games, though it has more problems with the pal snes games. The retro duo is not at all good for nes games. Just get a snes.

Even better, find one of the revised, compact versions.

The retro duo systems are ok, and they do the trick, but come on, the feeling isn't the same. Plus it looks like an odd duck when sitting with other retro gear.

The only reason I'd get a retro duo type system would be if I wanted a combo system for a guest room or something.

The retro duo has a great compatibility rate for nes games but it can't use nes accessories, and it has a problem with faulty pins, they tend to break very easily. It also has sound and minor video glitches.

Yeah the accessory bit is the only downer I've noticed. But over the last 15 years I've bought various nes's from garage sales, friends, and gamestores, and I finally decided I am just cursed. I returned the last one to play n trade and they happened to have a retro duo so I just gave in.

My sister has an nes now but it works very intermittently so I usually don't even bother trying it.

I would definitely go for original SNES for buying the original authentic system!!
