Hey all. I am living in Korea now and it seems Korea had an interesting history of Sega products. I guess for a long time Japanese products were banned in Korea, so companies like Sega and Nintendo had to publish their products through Korean companies. Sega used Samsung and Nintendo used Hyundai.
I haven't looked up much for Nintendo, but I know that for Sega, Samsung released a Sega Master System (Aladdin Boy), Sega Mega Drive (Super Aladdin Boy), and a Samsung branded Sega Saturn. I know there were limited games and the build on the Saturn was terrible. I'd be very interested in checking some of this stuff out while I am in Seoul.

I know the stuff is pretty rare and will most likely be difficult to find, but anyone have any information or know what some of that stuff is worth. Say I am able to find some of that Sega hardware, how much does it sell for?
[EDIT]: I've found some things and I have added some pictures as well as some descriptions and what I've learned about the games in Korea. There is one picture on page 2 and more on page 3.

Re: Korean Samsung Sega Products
Hey molotovwars, I don't actually know about Korean consoles. I'm actually kind of wondering what region they are. Will Japanese or American carts work in them at all, or just domestically released Korean titles?
Also, when did you move to Seoul? You teaching English with a program over there?

From what it says on the page he posted they seem to simply be an exact region free replica of a Japanese MegaDrive 1 sans RF or Serial ports.

Re: Korean Samsung Sega Products
As far as region, I actually thought some of the Korean stuff was PAL for some reason. The very few things I came across on eBay were from the UK, but it seems that nothing in Korea was terribly consistent. I think everything Sega was done through Samsung, but I've seen so many variations of the same systems and apparently there was even a Samsung 32x. I also saw pictures of a backup cartridge where cames could be dumped to a floppy disc.Ack wrote:Hey molotovwars, I don't actually know about Korean consoles. In the first article I linked, I re-read it and as far as region this was mentioned
I don't see where Modman saw that it was region free. The machine's region coding is the same as Japan as well. So all Japanese software will run on this Mega Drive as will the Japanese Mega CD and 32X.
I moved to Seoul at the end of August. I am teaching English here with SMOE (Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education) in the public school system. I haven't been on the boards much, but I saw a recent eBay auction that peaked my interest in the Korean Sega scene.

From looking around, there is some information, but it'll be interesting to see what I can find. Once I get some more information, I may type up an email in Korean and send it all the teachers in my school to see what anyone has in their basement. You never know.

Japanese and American consoles are of the same internal design and the only games that use any form of region lockout are few and far between.molotovwars wrote:I don't see where Modman saw that it was region free. The machine's region coding is the same as Japan as well. Re: Korean Samsung Sega Products
Yeah, I've been obsessed with the Korean versions of Japanese consoles ever since I learned of their existence. I was actually telling the Samsung rep at my store today about them! Of course a guy from Samsung Canada would have no previous knowledge about that slice of Samsung history, so it was interesting news to him!
The beauty of the Samsung Saturn: They didn't add Hangul to the system menu... but they did take the time to delete Japanese!
That is so Korea!
I was also chatting with my Korean buddy about the Hyundai Comboy and Mini Comboy! (NES and Game Boy). He had those when he was younger and was kinda shocked I knew about those.
I'll be coming to Korea soon enough and naturally I'll be hunting for these! Let us know how your search goes!

Now if you want to get some cool rare korean console get one of the Daewoo Zemmix consoles. They play MSX games. My favorite is the first one I pictured the Daewoo Zemmix Turbo. Now dosen't that look awesome. If not for yourself buy them to resale. You never see them for sale.

I did a year in Korea before coming to Japan. There's no way any system there was PAL. Then again, it's Korea so who the hell knows? That country is very unpredictable.
Most everything is a Japanese replica with cheaper parts and a Korean power supply (220V).
My X-Box is Korean.

Re: Korean Samsung Sega Products
That silver one awesome and appeals to my inner 6 year old. I can totally see myself running around the house playing spaceship with it as a kid when it wasn't performing video game duties. The red looks kinda cool too, but that joytsick has got to be a nightmare to use. There's not base to hold it steady.pepharytheworm wrote:Now if you want to get some cool rare korean console get one of the Daewoo Zemmix consoles. They play MSX games.
