Games you've come to enjoy

Post by Dylan »

The first time I played Metroid Prime, I thought it was boring. About a year later I decided to give it another shot, and it was like a completely different game. I'm not even sure at this point what I didn't like about it. Same thing with Super Castlevania 4.

Any else ever given a game a second chance and realized that you liked it?

Deadly Towers

Shitty starting equipment, hidden stuff and passages, no clue where to go, and easy to get knocked off a ledge and die instantly.

If you think about it, the first 3 things also apply to a certain NES game with a female bounty hunter in it too. Granted DT isn't nearly as good at that game, once I was determined to beat it properly and started making maps, I had fun with it and finished it without cheating.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. Not a big fan of the Dark Knight, and I didn't even get it for myself. But I persevered and the game itself was quite enjoyable. The last encouter with Joker wasn't stellar however.

Superman 64. There is actually a lot of depth once you get into it. At first the kryptnonite fog just seems like a gimmick because they couldn't program a decent draw distance, but it's actually mathematically laid out for optimal gaming.

The controls are fantastic too. At first it seems like they're terrible, but they're really trying to capture the struggle of clark kent having to live a double life. When you push up and try to make superman go up, it's the burden of his love for Lois that keeps him from doing it.

I wouldn't expect simple gamers to understand what the designers were trying to do, but those of us who understand deep story telling and symbolism can really grasp the true essence of what superman 64 represents.

Man, I dumped way to many hours into both Athena and Deadly Towers when I was younger. I never could pass either of them.

Also, LOL at Jrecee's take on Superman 64.
