I was just reintroduced to it as well, since I haven't played any shooters since the original Nes and Snes until recently when I discovered Ikaruga.

Ikaruga: Japanese Dreamcast, Gamecube, and I believe you can download it on Xbox 360
Gradius: Played this one back in the 80s and took me a while to beat it as a kid.
Rtype: Another oldie but good

And many more plus with browse this link http://www.racketboy.com/category/retro/shooters Coverage for many shooters :) I hope that helps.

Well, here goes.

N64:
Mario 64
Zelda Ocarina of Time (I'd also suggest Majora's mask, but opinions on that one are split)
Paper Mario
Mario Party (all similar, but I liked 3 the best)
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie (unless you aren't fond of collect-a-thons)
Mario Kart 64
Star Fox 64
I'd also suggest Smash Bros./Goldeneye, but they haven't aged well.

Gamecube:
Super Mario Sunshine (at least, I liked it)
Paper Mario 2
Viewtiful Joe
Metroid Prime 1/2
Pikmin 1/2
Timesplitters
Luigi's mansion

If only you had an NES or SNES...

2600 Shmups, you want River Raid and Megamania, there are lots more but those are two of the best.

Genesis, there's MUSHA, the Thunderforce Series, and a lot more.

N64, there's one. Star Soldier.

Dreamcast, there's an article for that.

DS, there's Nanostray and Nanostray 2, which I haven't gotten around to yet, and Ketsui Death Label which is awesome. You'll have to import or pirate that one though.

Each year Shmups.com vote on their top 25 shooters of all time.

Here's last year's list:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=26325

Included in that thread are "Honourable mentions", as well as stuff from previous years that dropped off the list (but are still worth playing).

Many console shmups are ports of arcade originals, but with that said are often still worth playing.

The other thing to remember too is that throughout the years there have been notable "pro-shmup" consoles. The Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast are flush with shooters. The Sony PS1 and PS2 also are pretty blessed. Although many titles Japanese-only, which means either needed a Japanese console, or a modded unit (or playing on emulators).

Conversely, you could count on one hand the number of shooters on the N64 and GameCube combined.

So check out that list as a start (plenty of videos on YouTube showing in-game footage of all of them). The other thing to remember is that within shmups there are many sub genres. Have a look around and see what you like. If you notice a pattern or a style of shmup you find interesting, share the titles with us. From there we can recommend more of the same for you to try.

Well, to be fair the first post only mentions "the genre", which somewhat mystified me before I looked at the forum it was in.

Well then you have impeccable taste.
