I have a CIOS of the 4.0 firmware on my Wii; is there a way to install a CIOS of 4.2 on my Wii without having to re-hack it? Or better yet, a workaround to just access the Wii Shop Channel?

I'm seriously contemplating removing my softmod and going for a chip based solution, I'm sick of games (official and copies) not working and not being able to update my firmware with waninkokos updater (it gets so far and fails everytime and there's nobody else on the net with this issue).

Would there be any issue with me just upgrading to 4.2 official firmware from my softmod?

There should be no issue upgrading with the official firmware. If you have an updated version of the HBC it will still be there after upgrading. When I did the update from 4.0 to 4.1 using waninkoko's updater I just left it there and came back like an hour later. It didn't work on the first try had to reboot and restart it. I've been reading that lots of people just update with official firmware keeping HBC and then reinstall dvdx and bootmii.

Try WiiSCU.
