What Are Your Top 5 Music Groups?

Post by hashiriya1 »

I am on the road a lot, so it is just me and my iPod on these trips. I never get sick of these bands, ever since I was a wee lad...

5. Slayer
4. N.W.A.
3. Pantera (And related bands with Pantera members: Rebel Meets Rebel, Down, Damage Plan, etc)
2. Metallica (Old stuff and new stuff, I don't care, I am not one of those fans)
1. (tie) Faith No More and NIN (Mike Patton and Trent Reznor are musical geniuses)

Runners up; Tupac, Marilyn Manson, Massive Attack, Mono (Japanese band), Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Sepultura.

Looking for recommendations on metal, too. Like Bleeding Through, Lamb of God, A Perfect Murder, etc

Eh, doubt my top five would help you find more music as I listen mostly to electronic. However you might like Ultraspank. They only lasted two albums. First self titled album is ok, but IMHO the second album Progress is really good. Google video search should give you an idea pretty quickly.

You can see what I listen to most in my Last FM Profile

In no order

Radiohead
Bjork
Dave Matthews Band
Nine Inch Nails
Phish

There is nothing better then these five. Plus, together they cover almost every genre of music. Shortly after these five which I've listened to almost exclusivly for the last 14 years come The Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, The Beatles, and The Books are up there too. None of these are as heavy as your list but maybe try some.
Even though in large quantity it's too much for me, have you tried Tool, or KMFDM?

KMFDM is an excellent recommendation. My top five are probably:

The Replacements
My Bloody Valentine
David Bowie
Radiohead
The Velvet Underground

This is in no order whatsoever.

Only five is tough, so I'll categorize these a little...here's 5 categories of 5.

Oh, and I'll limit it to rock since I assume that's what the thread is looking for.

In no order -

Five contemporary bands:
The Smashing Pumpkins and some related side projects
Wilco and related (Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur, etc.)
Radiohead
The Drive By Truckers
The Flaming Lips

Five Defunct bands
Nirvana
The Doors
Pink Floyd
Neutral Milk Hotel
Ben Folds Five

Five Solo Acts
Beck
Elton John
Bob Dylan
Neil Young
Bruce Springsteen

Five that I listen to frequently but don't yet have the body of work to jump into the top five:
The Arctic Monkeys
Two Gallants
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Decemberists
Deerhunter

Even these lists were really tough to narrow down and there are a ton more that could have made the cut...I buy a LOT of CDs...

Props on this topic, a good variation on fav music:

In no particular order:

1. Radiohead
2. Massive Attack
3. Steely Dan
4. Japan
5. SebastiAn

unpacked
1. We all know Radiohead (right?) and related (The Eraser), and we know they're so good. I think their time is passing, but they've written some amazing songs. Transcendent stuff.

2. Massive Attack's music is so muscular, amorphous and deadly. Like, almost taps into the essence of cinema through music, kind of.

3. Steely Dan + Donald Fagen. Hard to describe enticingly. I would just recommend the album The Nightfly (1980's) by Fagen. Achingly slick.

4. Japan - Bam! I can recommend the shit out of this band. Late 70's-early 80's, cerebral but down to earth; cooky, irregular rhythms. The essential album is Tin Drum and the essential song is Ghosts.

5. SebastiAn - He's a representative of the electronic music I like so much, same label as Justice (the French one?), Ed Banger. http://www.myspace.com/0sebastian0 Ross Ross Ross is a good start.

That aside,
Ween (Quebec is a great album)
Soulwax/2manydjs (dancey and dirty - song - "Krack")
Eagles of Death Metal (the halfway point between ACDC and the Rolling Stones, album Peace Love Death Metal)
Hot Chip (sinuous dance rock http://www.myspace.com/hotchip song - "Don't Dance")
Wombstretcha' the Magnificent (hilariously violent rap [old skool video game refs ftw] http://www.myspace.com/wombstretchathemagnificent song - "On a Daily")
+ hypem.com just check the latest tracks

and why are you always on the road?
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for me.

Queens of the Stone Age and this band are also big in our house - my wife is a big fan of both.
