Game Disc Repair?

Post by HellHammer »

When I was younger I can remember having little music or game shops around town that would offer a 'repair' service for scratched or damaged compact discs. However, I always treated my games well and never needed them repaired.

Unfortunately, I do now. I was given a large collection of games by a close friend and after finding that he had very good taste, I also found that he was very harsh with his games, especially the more rare ones. So now I have two games, Shenmue for DC and Klonoa for PS, in particular that will not play because of scratches. I've seen the repair-it-yourself toothpaste guides, but I think it's going to take a complete resurfacing of the discs.

My real issue is that the places I've found still offering CD repair are exclusively online and I am TERRIBLY uneasy sending my games away to some random address.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any good experience with a particular company offering these services?

I've sent a few discs to skippydisc.com and I've been very satisfied each time. A little on the pricey side, maybe, but they are fast and do a good job.

Man, the one near me wants $5 each. The smaller indie place closer to me will do it for free.

Anyway on topic, depending on whether you're worried about them looking nice, or just working, those Disc Dr things do work. You just end up with an even coat of spiral scratches which aren't all that appealing looking IMHO. Online places probably use the $50K machines to resurface them.

See, I don't particularly care about the price. Even if it's $5 a piece, I'd pay it. However, I really want a professional repair, which is why I opted not to DiscDr. them. And I'm really worried about losing my games in the mail or to some crooked employee of an online repair shop.

Anyway, thanks for the great responses. I may have to do a better job looking around for a shop locally.

Understandable. I should state that most of the discs I thought about getting resurfaced were audio CDs that I might have only paid $4-8 for in the first place. If I were fixing a game worth $50+, then yeah, $5 is no big deal. Anyway, hope you find some place to get them taken care of.

I've used these folks a couple of times:

They even have a money back guarantee.

If you can manage to find a Gamecrazy store that's still in business (sigh), they usually do a decent job of resurfacing discs for $2 each.

If you have a Family Video store nearby they'll charge $2 per disc or it's free of you're a member.

The good thing is that member registration is free.
