Computer ordered...ok deal?

So I went with Dell. I'm not sure if I feel good about my purchase or not. We'll see when it gets here I guess.

This is what I got...

Dell Studio XPS 8000
20" HD monitor (Model ST2010 if anyone cares)
Intel Core i7-860
8GB DDR3 SDRAM
1TB SATA 16MB cache HDD
nVidia GeForce GTX260
Windows 7 Home Premium

$1299.00 +tax

Guess that about sums it up. Any thoughts? Did I over pay or does it sound about right? Should this computer do me right? Since I work at a place that sells MS products maybe I will upgrade the OS...or not. *shrug*

I am looking at that exact same computer. I will probably get it in the next few months. Let me know how it works out. Did you order right off Dell.com? Bestbuy has a package with an 18.5" monitor and printer for $1099.

With those specs (which aren't bad at all for the price), you really should of gotten Win7 Pro. I can get why you wouldn't have known, it is basically brand new. But the Pro version comes with a very nice integrated windows virtual machine (it runs seamlessly in the gui so you don't visually see the difference) which increases backwards compatability. Which is kind of important if you like using older software especially as it's 64-bit (I hope so or that 8 gigs is useless).

that's the virtual machine I'm referring to, they simply just call it "XP mode", but it's not like Win XP and Vista with it's backwards compatability layer... this is an actual virtual machine.

As a student you could pick up Win 7 professional for another 30 bucks (when it brings you to the purchase page at the bottom there is a notation about if you need access to networks or something, and a link to professional at the same price):

I grabbed a copy with my girlfriends college email account. It's legite, it works great, the download speed was great.

And you could say put that home premium on another machine in your house or something (your parents for instance)... though that OEM shit is a pain sometimes.




As for your system. I use the i7 chip as well (I got the 940) with 12 gigs of DDR3... a little better then yours true, but still you should expect something close to mine. And I can run all kinds of stuff at once. I usually have a 2 NX sessions open (X11 with ssh tunneling remote desktop), several virtual machine (sometimes up to 5) as well as numerous programs, music players, movies, and video games... on top of all this with Compiz running (this is of course all under Linux... but again, comparable speeds is my point). My machine never feels like it's dogged down or anything.

I saw that deal at BB. I had thought about getting that package with a 21.5" monitor for 1199.19 or so but they were out of stock. The one I got I ordered from the website/phone and I upgraded the video card from the nVidia GeForce GTS240 to the GTX260 for a hundred bucks. Mine has no wireless card, printer or speakers though.

If your asking if the OS is 64-bit the answer is yes. I work part time at Target right now, don't they have some sort of program for people who work at places that sell MS products that is even cheaper than the student discount?

All I know about is the MSDNAA which depending on the company can entitle you to free copies of a lot of Microsofts software. I've only ever heard of it in academic institutes, my University has the MSDNAA in the Computing and Engineering section and they offer office ultimate and windows 7 ultimate for free.
