What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
You should never ask forumites to help you with an essay. We're all retarded.
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for me.

I second Duck Soup. Not only is it my favorite, it is a fantastic story that is nigh timeless. I would suggest reading Groucho's autobiography aswell: Memoirs of a Mangy Lover, and Harpo's "Harpo Speaks"Luke wrote:Duck Soup would be the obvious choice, but I would go with A Day at the Races.Reverend wrote:Hey everyone. I'm going to try to go into the School of Visual Arts Summer PreCollege program for film production. In order to qualify for financial aid (which I desperately need), I need to write an essay on a movie that has significantly impacted my life.
I've decided that I'll write about a Marx Brothers movie, as they were the films that really started my love of cinema. I'm just not sure which movie to write about. I'll be marathoning their movies this weekend to decide, but I would like to know what you think.
If you haven't already, read Groucho and Me, it's incredible. Julius "Groucho" Marx lived a sad life.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
17, remember?
I used to watch AMC a ton years back when it had a lot of black and white stuff on it and some TCM every now and then, but I mostly stop when I hit movies from the late 50's or early 60's.
It's just that I don't really have access to these pictures and grew up in a home with a parent who doesn't actually know who the Marx Bros. are if you were to ask them.
But ask me about 80's-90's (70's stuff too to some extent) movies and pop culture and I'm usually spot on as to what the topic is.
Like I said though, my age coupled with never having seen or been shown any of these shorts or pretty much any vintage golden era pictures as a child or before gaming really took over my life made for me never having seen them.
It' not like I don't want to, though. One day I'll make sure to watch all of this old stuff, it's just that I want to watch it properly like it was meant to on a TV or home theater instead of a tiny computer screen.

I think you'd really dig the Marx Bros. movies, they are if anything, very entertaining. Music, dance, humor, action, all kinds of good stuff.
One thing though, they definitely aren't mindless movies where you just sit back and "Ohh and Ahh". You actually have to put a teeny tiny amount of attention to the dialogue, or the countless hilarious jokes will be lost. Groucho's delivery is so quick and great that it is easy to miss some of his jokes. Possibly the funniest man to walk the Earth. I mean, I loved Mitch Hedberg, even saw him live, but he isn't even close to how funny Groucho was. He got away with so much because the censors couldn't keep up with him, and a lot of his jokes just went over their heads. And this was the 20's-30's. The Man was centuries ahead of his time.
Some good ones from Julius in DUCK SOUP:
"I can see you right now in the kitchen, bending over a hot stove. But I can't see the stove."
"Remember, you're fighting for this woman's honor, which is probably more than she ever did."
"I'll see my lawyer about this as soon as he graduates from law school."
"I could dance with you until the cows come home. On second thought, I'd rather dance with the cows till you come home."

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
17 doesnt matter. I started watching Marx Bros and Stooges when I was a wee lad of four (4) and that was in the 80s - before AMC was even available in my neck of the woods. Granted my father is a big fan of old movies, but he actually hates the Stooges and only recently really became a fan of the Marx Bros (he is a Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle, and Chaplin fiend though). It was Georgia Public Broadcasting early in the morning.
Their films in the Silver Screen Collection DVD Set, are unlike films we will ever have again. They are simply timeless in their approach. Sure some of the gags are outdated: Harpo did use a mining helmet with a lantern on it, but the whole just defines the word classic. So much so that some people were using the President Speech song from Duck Soup to describe former President Bush.
Sadly I dated a girl named Lydia who did not like my jokes about tattoos, but it was not nearly as bad as when I dated a Mary...
