saturn modchip

Post by elios_kenni »

I got my saturn back out that I modded last year. I didn't solder anything down because I've never done it before and didn't want try something like that on this project. Anyways the red wire for the power it messed up or something. I need to cut it and strip it again but if I do that the wire will be way to short. It's short enough as it is but anyways what kind of wire can I use to replace it?

You can use the 32-gauge kynnar wire that can be found at Radio Shack. It's also known as wire wrap wire.

I often use wire from a spare piece of Cat 5 cable for this kind of thing. Just cut it open, untwist the pair, and solder. Beats a trip to Radio Shack for sure.

Alright I spliced the red wire that is connected to the modchip and then added the new 32 gauge wire. After that I tried it again to see if I got any power to the disc drive and I got nothing >_< I then decided to unhook the modchip and just hook the ribbon back into the saturn and still no the disc drive did not turn. I then looked at the ribbon and noticed that some of the ends was bent and wasn't going in. I bent it back and I got the disc drive going again but if I touch it, it dies again. So I need a new ribbon. I have the saturn with the round buttons. I can't remember if it's the model 1 or 2. But I know one has oval and the other has round and mine is round. Does anyone have an extra ribbon they would be willing to part with? If so please pm me.

a few more questions. When I did get the mod chip going and the disc drive going. Would a faulty ribbon make it not read discs. What little bit of time I had the mod chip and drive going yesterday it wouldn't read any burnt or actual saturn games. Kept saying it was a cd and show tracks. But today when I hooked the ribbon back into the saturn it loaded a game right up. So is it just the ribbon or is my mod chip dead? The mod chip got really hot today is it suppose to do that? I've never paid much attention to it before since I've never really had any problems before this.

Does your ribbon cable simply go left to right, or does it zig zag to the back?

Did you burn the discs at a slow speed like 4x and/or try a different brand of discs too?

I would start by verifying with an original Saturn disc. I think you tried this with the mod chip and it didn't work. Then you bypassed the modchip and things worked.

So it sounds like your installation is defective or you have a bad chip. I don't recall mine getting hot but then again, I never touched it. I can't imagine the chips generating much heat. Can you take some photos of your installation? Where did you buy your chip from?

my ribbon doesn't zipzap it just goes left to right. And the modchip worked a few months ago, I just haven't played it since then. So all the burnt games I have are the ones I use to play on it and they worked just fine. The ribbon has to be bad. The end connector that goes into the mod chip one of the pins is bent and I bent it back but it's all wrinkle looking and I'm guess it's not getting a good connection. And while I had the modchip hooked in today and yesterday it didn't matter if it was a burnt game or a real game it would still just read it as a music cd. Oh and I got the mod chip from here.
