Retro platform advice

Yes, I do think you should skip these games, because gaming is not supposed to be a list of obligations you have to fulfill. It's just supposed to be fun.

And no, I wouldn't care about missing out on Mario and Sonic. I've never finished a game of either series (except Sonic Adventure, but still wholly unimpressed) -- I was a Mega Man kid.

I really don't think my gamer cred is damaged in any way for not liking Mario or Sonic, or, even if it is, I don't feel that my life is made any worse by the fact.

Don't feel bad, I haven't beaten that many Mario games(and no Sonic games). Zelda and Mega Man titles, however, are a different story...

Nah, I don't. I could never get into any Mario games. Always hated the music. I also thought Sonic games were rather limited.

Mega Man, on the other hand, was perfect for me, so my platforming needs were satiated.

Mega Man is a game I do not want to play, its too damn difficult and the controls are stubborn. I think I went into 1 Boss battle and I figured it out, its close to impossible to beat him. So why even try

Controls are stubborn? Well, that's something you don't hear often about Mega Man games. Rather, you read that controls are quite precise.

Anyway, Mega Man games vary in difficulty, but I haven't stumbled across any that is "impossible" or even close to that (however, I only played one game of the Mega Man Zero series, which is decent enough, and no other spin-offs, aside from the X series and Legends series).

If you think that Mega Man 2, for instance, is impossible and not even worth trying to get into, that's more evidence that you need to chill out and take your time with the games you're playing, kingmohd84. Don't rush through them to keep your schedule.

i am not sure which mega man I played, i can't tell the difference , but the difficult one was more like NES game. Mega Man was tiny.
But will give it another try.

I feel old after reading this thread. I worry about the attention span of today's youth.

He is probably talking about that people before had enough patience to play the game over and over to get it right. Now I just want to run through it and get over with it.

Truth is, back in the day those kind of games gave you a bang for your buck. You can play them forever. The reason is good titles are released scarcely back then. The idea was to buy a good game and play it to death.
the mentality changed now, a 6 month game is an old one. Buy the new one. Are people still playing COD 2 or 3 for example? Its a new game every year. No dedication any more.

Now there is a huge mass of retro+modern titles and they take hours upon hours to finish. I can't dedicate myself to 1 game for 3 or 4 months to master.
Another thing is, in modern games you can save and monitor your progress. In retro games, if you switch the system off(due to lack life duties) or die you have to do it all over again. I mean just imagine the terror of electricity power down on the final level!

The first game I ever bought myself after Mario/Duck Hunt (my first system all to myself was an NES) was Metroid. My second was Mega Man 2. I think I know every single passageway like the back of my hand in Metroid and I can one-life Mega Man 2 almost every time. I can also one-life Super Mario Brothers without warping and can tell you that the secret in level 8-4 is to only use the pipes after the lava pits.

BTW, Airman is easy... on both modes.

Also, I'm assuming the OP is pretty young because he uses terms like "retro game" and says he hasn't finished even one.*GIANT STAR* For me, the NES is still current and I was in an argument just today with a co-worker about the SMS vs. NES (that bastard got a US copy of Panzar Dragoon Saga for $5).

Its really frustrating beating 9 levels then losing your last life on the tenth and doing it all over again.

Yup. I got a few game overs in Labyrinth zone before getting by it. On the NES, Double Dragon 2 was horrible for killing me right near the end of the game, as was Ninja Gaiden 1 and, probably the worst of all, Golden Axe on the Genesis (actually, I first beat it in the arcade. So many quarters.....). Konami was so awesome for giving a bit of help to us.


*GIANT STAR*I've since read the rest of this thread and realize that the OP is in his mid-20s and had a 10 year gap where he didn't play games. Still, it's funny to read someone (myself) make an ass out of themselves, isn't it?

I surely appreciate your skills at retro games(I call them retro because everyone else does, personally I call them old games) but in this era its not worth it being that skilled at one game. You really need dedication, and there is just too many option and variety to be dedicated/loyal to few games to master. If it were the 80's , I would follow in your footsteps.

Why would it be "worth it" to be skilled at playing a game?

It's about having fun doing it, not ignoring the particular game because you feel it doesn't help you play new games.
