and make sure you get the japanese version with english subtitles, not that dubbed bs

I didn't mention Bleach because - like pretty much every Shonen Jump property - it starts out strong for the first 13 or so episodes and then goes downhill in a huge way with floods of filler-filled episodes that try to do as little as possible so they don't catch up with the manga. If they could have just compressed Bleach into a 26-52 episode series, it would have been great.

Sorta reminds me of how most JRPGs are great for the first few hours, then they go down into a blaze of grinding "glory".

Yeah, now that you mention it, I would agree with you that the series peaked around episode 10, and remained pretty good up until the end of season 3. Season 4 was just a joke.

No one mentioned Bleach because, well, OP asked for a different type of anime.

Now, I love Bleach (see my avatar), but I can't stand the filler sagas either. Now it is on filler and I'm almost killing myself after each episode. The manga, on the other hand, is still quite good.

If anyone wants to watch Bleach, they should just avoid the Bount arc and the Shusuke Amagai arc -- and now the Zanpakutou Unknown Tales arc. If they do so, they'll be able to enjoy the anime.

Sometimes I think that animes should take a break like American series do. I mean, longer animes are shown all year long, no pauses at all; it's obvious you'll have to crappify the series just to fill the TV time. American series, much more reasonably, are broadcast for a little more than half a year (counting the weeks in which there are no episodes for whatever reason, like holidays) and then come back only next year. If anything, the problem is that they might have too much content for too little time.

I reckon Naruto (which I don't watch) was on filler from episode 136 to 220. That's fucking insane, almost two years of non canonical bullshit airing on TV.

Isn't the Bleach video game by treasure supposed to be really good? I don't even know what system its on, but I've heard its decent.

There are a few on Gamecube, Wii, and DS. They're all pretty damn good given the source material and control schemes.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I think the only Bleach games made by Treasure were on DS.

Yeah, I've got the first Bleach DS game (Blades of Fate, I think?) and I loved it. Didn't pick up the second one, because I heard they heavily nerfed all the females by making them take double damage. If I can't play as Orihime and Tatsuki, it isn't worth my money.

Might be repeating a few others, but I would like to toss in my two cents as well. But these should be along the lines you are looking for.

Serial Experiments Lain
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (and Higurashi no noko koro ni kai/rei)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Gunbuster
Diebuster
Beck
Macross Frontier
Saikano(Saishu Heiki Kanojo)
Elfen Lied
Kite
Eden of the East
Bakemonogatari

That should do it for dark/interesting story anime, at least for awhile. Higurashi and Umineko should fit your tastes quite well actually. And Gunbuster and Diebuster are some of Gainax's finest efforts in my opinion.
Boy I tell you what, are those some god dang video games?

Not sure if anyone said Elfen Lied? That is one of the darkest animes I've seen
