I've never read either Twilight or The Vampire Chronicles, but my sister told me that she read Twilight and thought it was utter trash, but was shocked to find that The Vampire Chronicles actually had some incredible passages to it pertaining to religion. Anne Rice is a born-again Christian nowadays, not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's severly dulled her apparently once-sharp comments on religion. But in here old books, according to my sister, there were alot of interesting ideas presented; one was about how she explained the existence of Jesus Christ being Jehovah trying to live life through a human's perspective, and he lived a completely perfect life. But she says that he made a mistake - of course he'd live his life perfectly because he already know what would happen after he died; the idea is that all sin comes from angst surrounding our uncertainty of our fates, and the idea that even Jehovah would mess up were he in our situation. I personally thought think that's an incredible concept, and there were a few others in there that sounded fascinating to me. Then again, my sister didn't detail much of the romantic stuff because she knows that I wouldn't be interested in it, so I'm guessing there's alot of fluff surrounding the truly interesting parts, lest it wouldn't garner as much hate as it has.

Oh, and I sympathize with you guys who like your vampires to be monsters, but although the moody vampire archetype has flooded the market as of late, there's a great power in effectively taking a supernatural creature - a God - and exposing his fallibilities. That's the thing that makes Greek mythology so fascinating - their strengths are greatly exaggerated, but this also means their faults are greatly exaggerated, often making the resulting product far more pathetic than a regular human being. Meh, anyway, I might give The Vampire Chronicles a go one of these days since my sister speaks so highly of them, but Twilight is fucking trite.

What's wrong with enjoying trashy pop lit? You can recognize something as trash and still enjoy it. As far as I know, there is no clause people sign when they become artists that says they can't enjoy crap.

As far as I know, nobody on this board is arguing that Twilight is anything more than trashy pop lit. I know intelligent, highly educated women who still enjoy reading trashy romance novels on occasion. I used to know a professor who taught classes on film, and some of her favorite movies were stupid popcorn flicks (and she acknowledges that). I used to know a guy who was a total food snob, but he liked Taco Bell. Julia Child enjoyed creamed chipped beef on toast.

I mean, it's not like any of us are the target audience for "Twilight" anyway.

My girlfriend likes Twilight, and she knows it is trashy pop lit. She even makes fun of it. I mean, she's quite a reader, she knows Twilight could be improved in several ways, but she doesn't care, it's her mindless fun. As far as I know, as long as you don't confine your sample of Twilight fanbase to 14-year old emo girls, you'll see that they are quite self-aware. If you go on and read some fan blogs, you'll also notice that they're healthily self-deprecating.

I think we all can agree that the best kind of vampire is the Leslie Nielsen vampire.

to me it doesn't matter if he likes it or not. he has made many great games with beautiful narratives. i can't hate him, even if i truly hate twilight. my hate comes from the image on vampires that it puts on today's youth and the gary/mary sue like narrative that has no originality, has no real plo,t and is only a great attention grabber because the author has a way with words. still love kojima!

Yeah, those Kojima fanboys! Oh wait... ;)

I don't know about Rowling (I read part of Harry Stoner when I was younger), but saying that Shakespeare isn't that great, that's pretty ballsy. Do you have a linky?

Finally, to end all discussion, this is the best vampire:

Vampires - suck, have always sucked in literary form. Every time the idea of a vampire enters into pop culture it become really dull and boring... this includes the all famous Bram Stoker's. Vampires should remain where it belongs, folklore.

Zombies - suck, suck for all the same reasons Vampires suck.

Ninjas and Pirates - oh do these suck, these suck so much more then the previous two. They suck so much more because they're based on real historical groups... The previous are romanticizing fictional folk lore, these guys are the romanticizing some fucked up murderous bastards who actually existed!

Kojima - meh, not really my cup of tea. The fact he likes Twilight just highlights the many reason I don't like most of his stuff. Not all, I enjoyed Snatcher, but that just highlights the trashy stuff I enjoy... I'm just a sucker for cyberpunk. Shoot me.

With that all in mind, have fun Kojima... but be careful, as that article points out, the cynics will really jab you hard for that. Me being one of them.
