Best old portable handheld system?

Post by shadobeni »

What is the best old portable handheld system that does not have the words "game boy" in it? Or at least which one did you think had the most potential to be great but got stomped by game boy(s) anyway.

I nominate the NEOGEO POCKET COLOR

this thing had great controls, the clicky joystick rules, and the fighters alone on it are awesome. Card fighters clash, Sonic, Metal Slug, Neo Turf masters are good games as well, i just wish there was alot more developed for it

it had lots of potential
it just didnt have the right marketing i think, plus SNK had almost ZERO third party support. that hurts a lot

From a sega perspective, I would say Sega Game Gear. Color with options for TV adapter, Sega Master System Games, optional battery pack (though less portable). They can be really cheap in the wild. Boxed copies of games are not hard to find.

I can't think of that many option. Neo Geo Pocket for sure. Wonderswan, though language can be a issue with those, and ummm Turbografx express.

I second this. The joystick on the NGPC is just amazing, and the game library is really quite amazing. There aren't too many games that aren't at least decent. If only it had stayed around a little longer I can imagine we would have seen a lot more amazing games as well.

Edit: I just realized I typed amazing three times in this short post. Oh well, that MUST mean the NGPC is AMAZING.

Neo Geo Pocket Color.
Worth it for just Card Fighters Clash and Neo Turf Masters. The console and the games are pretty cheap too.

My vote easily goes to the NGPC. There are very few games I haven't enjoyed on it. Not to mention you can pick one up with some of the best games for less than $50.
