I really dont like anime, but Cowboy Beebop is one of the few series i actually like along with gundam and some other crap

Ill name a few I liked that no one posted, however I go for more lighthearted stuff than you seem to like - I enjoy adventure stories.
Series:
Future Boy Conan - Miyazaki's tv series. A foolhearty but very kind child and his adventures through a futuristic water filled world. Full of Miyazaki humor and just all around fun.

Chrno Crusade - A nun and the demon she is bound to fighting off other demons. However if you are not hooked on the first episode, just stop watching. But if it hooks you it is solid till the end. I mean the priest of the church has a crucifix lightsaber!

Secret of Cerulean Sand - Based on two Jules Verne stories it is about a girl and the family butler trying to find her older brother through a Victorian Science Fiction world.

One Piece - sub/raw only - Ok this one is well known but dont approach it with any preconditions but this one: it goes from Godfather level storytelling to Three Stooges slapstick in the manner of seconds. It is silly yes, but some episodes - ie the Nami Story Arc) are just incredibly deep. Ill be honest, I watched the first two episodes long ago and thought it was stupid. Then a friend convinced me to give it the first 10...180 episodes later I was still watching. Certain characters are just annoying, so is the overall story, but the adventure is quite good.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor - I am hesitant to ever suggest military series. Most people hate them, or have seen Starship Yamato/Starblazers and Macross/Robotech and dont think anything could be better. Well Tylor is a comedy military series where a guy joins the space navy because he think itll be an easy life. By some bizarre circumstances he becomes the captain of the ship Soyokaze - Gentle Breeze, full of misfits from the other ships. It makes you think and I laugh every time I watch it. The best part is Rightstuf just released the remastered version.

Movies:
Robot Carnival - Fantasia of Anime, with Robots.

Interstella 5555 - Put Daft Punk and Captain Harlock in a blender.

Wow, thank you everybody for your suggestions. I have got my work cut out for me.
I forgot to mention I have seen a lot of Miyazaki's movies. I never thought of them as anime. I know it technically is animated movies, but they just seemed like on a whole other level. I even went to the Ghibli Museum because a friend of mine is a Ghibli nut.

Almost forgot to mention Air Gear, it's the closest thing we'll ever see to a Jet Set Radio Anime.

You find Slayers lacking these days? I still love it. Slayers was the first anime I really picked up, and I still love it to this day.

Granted, I haven't watched the series in a while, just the OVAs. I'd still like to check out this new series that just started up - I saw some episodes at the AWA before this years, and it looked very entertaining.

It was my first anime too and I was quite dissapointed to find it so lacking. This applies to the new series too =/

However I'm very picky about what I watch. TVtropes destroyed my life. Being frank I don't like a lot of series. Suzumiya Haruhi, half of Excel Saga, half of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, that's all in the end are the ones that come to mind.

Ah yeah, I forgot Zetsubou Sensei. It's hilariously disturbing and well worth a watch.

Also if you're a Final Fantasy fan, Angel's Egg collaboration between artist Yoshitaka Amano and director Oshii. Dark, surreal and absolutely gorgeous-looking but very little dialogue.


It's not anime, but I recently discovered this French animated movie from the 80's 'Les Maitres du Temps' (The Masters of Time) with character designs by Mœbius. Mœbius' illustrations were the inspiration for the future city of LA in Blade Runner, he worked on Alien, The Fifth Element and Team Andromeda lists him as a major influence on their Panzer Dragoon world. It's an awesome show, check it out

Yeah, I agree. One of the things I found weird about that anime was it's popularity. It was a great show, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I doubt I've seen an anime with such a large fanbase in terms of ratio of fans/episodes. It's just baffling. Also, the behavior of the team that made the anime is just as confusing. Barely giving any notification about the new season, the airing order is out of the implied viewing order, and several other things that make it seem like whenever they make an announcement, more questions are raised than answered. In fact, the whole damn thing is just a huge enigma... maybe that's why it's popular?
