Xbox 360 - Any Other Ways to Connect Wirelessly?

Post by darthmunky »

Is there any way to connect my Xbox 360 wirelessly to my router without having the 360 network adapter or a laptop?

you can buy a second wireless router and flash it with DD-WRT firmware. I have an old blog post bookmarked for it, but any other info and the google is your best bet. I never actually did this.

OR- you can get a wireless Ethernet bridge.... which is kind of the same thing as flashing the router with new firmware, you just don't have to flash it.

I have a NETGEAR GS108 Gigabit Ethernet Switch. It is wired, but really worth it if you are going to plug in a ton of stuff.

*edit* i realize that a wireless bridge might be just about the same price as the xbox wireless guy that you can get at gamestop. Maybe even a bit more expensive. However, it might be worth it to get the bridge instead of the wireless usb guy because you can plug in more devices to it, like your ps2, orignal xbox, and wii if you are having problems connecting (like i do). Plus, if you ever want to plug in anything else, you have ports for it. It just has more options and uses beyond the 360's life.

how much are you willing to pay? I regularly see Xbox wireless adapters for around $40 on craigslist. I bought one off of a racketmember here for that price a few months back

If you just want the 360 to be online then chances are it's not going to be worth the additional difficulty of going the wireless bridge.I went this route when my router was on a different floor to my 360. I flashed a spare WRT54GL router and turned it into a wireless bridge, these used to cost about £35-40 compared to the £60 for the 360 wireless adaptor. I don't know how much they are now. It requires a bit of technical knowledge and a keen troubleshooting mindset. You're dealing with what is essentially a range extender that can also act as an access point. So if you get some of the configuration wrong (you have to change the SSIDs to the same thing on both your internet connected router and your wireless extender) you could stop all the devices on your network from accessing the internet.

You can make it simpler by buying a purpose built dedicated ethernet-wireless bridge, but a single ethernet port model will cost you the roughly the same as the wireless adaptor for 360 so it's not really worth it. However, if you have lots of consoles that connect over ethernet in the same place, such as Xbox, GC, PS2, DC then it would make sense to pay a bit extra and get a 4 or 6 port switch to get them all on your network (if you want to of course).
