Of course the 1000 series PSX is the one with the crappy plastic mechanicals in the drive. I did pick up a cheap working one from Goodwill for the novelty factor of the phono plugs on the back though. 8)

Yeah, but there are guides to build your own external power supply (The heat from which is responsible for the uneven wear that prematurely killed most 1000's drives by warping the already fragile plastic.) housing, and I believe that with a longer ribbon cable (I can't remember where I saw those for sale, I think it may have been Rich's PSX Parts.) you can use a 9000 drive in a 1000 PSX as from what I've read what really matters inside the unit is it's motherboard's CD-Audio decoding hardware.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Yeah, I was looking if I could cram a 40 mm fan in there when I was cleaning it since I have a few spares. Looks like it would take a 25 or 30 mm to make one fit without cutting.

Maybe when I have some time I'll try to do the PSU, fan and drive mods myself as I've been wanting to do them for a while just to see how it works.

Of course I'll have to get a 1000 unit in good shape (or just any 1000 at all) first.

I only tested the one I picked up, but I'm pretty sure there was at least one more when I picked up mine for cheap. If you really want one I could pick up and send at cost.

I'd say yes, but I'm trying to save money for my last chance to get some imports from Hashiriya1, I'll contact you if the situation changes though.
