Not that I'm defending Microsoft, but there's almost nothing comparable between Gameboy and Xbox 360.

Yeah, it's fragile when handled inappropriately and slammed around by USPS in shipping, nut it's pretty reliable for a 15 year old primarily CD based system. Especially when you compare it to the Model 1 Sega CD's horrid failure rate due to the plethora of plastic moving parts it used.

I can't tell you how many PS1's I've gone through. The slim models are fine, but the original, gray model is horrid.

My Gameboy Color has gone through so much abuse over the years, but after a bit of cleaning to get rid of the grime (I played this A LOT) it looks and plays good as new.

The best original model PS1 is the SCPH-9000 series which is the last model of the original PlayStation ever produced. It features a drive with an all steel construction (This eliminates disc read errors and skipping during music or FMV which was caused by the plastic construction of older drives) and a much higher quality laser which is an all around much higher quality one than any other PS1 model and should last you far longer.

Just hold down the MODE button on the top right of your 6-Button Controller as you boot up the Genesis until you see the title screen. This makes your 6-Button controller register as a 3-Button Controller until you turn the system off.

Ms. Pacman and I believe one other game (The name of which completely escapes me at the moment) were the reason for the creation of the mode button on the 6-Button Controller as some error in their programming made them freak out whenever they detected anything other than a 3-Button.
It used to happen to me with golden axe, infact I bought that game 4 times and returned it each time because (being 12 at the time) I thought it was faulty and nobody at the store knew what was causing it. It wasn't untill about a year later that I read it in a game mag that I found out how to fix it (holding mode) and I bought it for a fifth and final time.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. I remember I had an original model ps1 (don't know the model number but it was definitely not the last batch before the slim) and the black knob that you attach cds to broke on mine but I stuck it back together with crazy glue. also a face button stopped working on one of the controllers which I attempted to open up and fix but then when I assembled it back together none of the face buttons worked. This occurred after at least a few years.

had a used ps2 original model that worked fairly well although it couldn't read blue discs (ie disc read error) unless the console was physically set in its vertical position.

Although I think sony products have good performance I've never found them to be all too durable.

Curlypaul wrote:Early DS lites had issues with the case being weak around the hinges. Also the early touch screens allowed bits of matter to get inbetween in the coloured plastic frame and the screen which rendered the touch screen useless.

I have no idea of model numbers where this is fixed although mine originally suffered both these problems and the model number is USG-001

I have the same model. How did you fix the issues?

It's a Dreamcast, it's immortal.
Sorry, but Dreamcast is probably the least durable of Sega's systems, either that or GameGear. There are plenty of people I've met who have gone through multiple DC's.

And let me guess, it's rare and expensive?

The DC has only two big flaws, the random reset error and the controller port board's resistor burning out. Fixing both of these permanently if they occur will cost you about $3-$4 and 20mins. of your time.

In the case of the 9000 series PS1's they're actually quit cheap and plentiful (I own about four of them and bought them all for like $5 at goodwill and the average price for a US one clearly marked as a 9000 series is about $15-$20 on eBay.) as they were released in late Aug. 1998 and sold through all of 1999 and 2000 which means that there's literally millions of them out there in the wild.

The ones that are supposedly worth money are the 1000 series for their audiophile quality CD player, but they're so common as well that their value hasn't really risen past the $15-$25 mark.
