Best variant of the 2600 to buy?

Post by rwilloug »

All,

I want to add a 2600 compatible system to my collection. I've never owned an Atari, so I'm looking for recommendations on what variation of the 2600 to choose or if I should go with a 7800 instead. I like the idea of a six switch 2600, but my understanding is that only a few games make a six switcher beneficial to have anyway. From a purely aesthetic perspective, I think the 2600 Jr. and 7800 look sharper than the older models, though if I had to pick an older one just based on looks, I think I'd go with the Darth Vader model. Then of course, is the question of whether the 7800 specific games are worth having on top of the 2600 games.

What do people think? Are there other issues I haven't considered? Any advice people can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

rwilloug

The Jr. is a small model, but in my opinion it lacks the personality of the wood-finished or heavy-sixer 2600s. But it still works fine :)

(Thought I've had problems getting a decent picture out of my Jr., though that might be because I'm using an NES RF switch instead of the original...)
