Sega CD: Is it worth it?
A sort of follow up to that 32X thread, but about the Sega CD. I think it would be worth it, but i can't seem to find a good price for it. It seems that its 45+, which is more than what I paid for my Genesis. Also it seems there are WAY more games for it too. Any thoughts about the Sega CD?
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

Yes, very much so. Silpheed, Snatcher, Lunar, all awesome and each would justify the purchase alone.

It's a great machine with a good selection of games that is definitely worth investing in.
Try here on the forums in the BST section and you'll probably be able to grab a Model 2 Sega CD for $35-$40 easily.

I totally agree!! I bought a Sega CD just because of Snatcher and RPG titles such as Lunar, Popful Mail.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:It's a great machine with a good selection of games that is definitely worth investing in.

Sega CD is great for rpg's. Working Designs made a few. Other than the ones mentioned, they got Vay, and Sega made Shining Force CD. Its got great platformers, and some other unique games. If you like your genesis, Id say its a great addition.
Re: Sega CD: Is it worth it?
It is very much worth it. Sonic CD, Snatcher, Soul Star, Slipheed, Batman (Driving parts are fun). If you have a good eye you can snag one for under 10 bucks at a flea market or yard sale, even if its broken they are relatively easy to fix.
I got mine for $5 and it wouldn't power on. Turned out it needed a new fuse.

Re: Sega CD: Is it worth it?
When Sega CD came out there were no consumer-grade CD burners, so the console has no problem playing burned games. If there are any Sega CD games you can't afford, you can just burn them. It works better than emulation because you can play with the real controller in front of your TV.

Protip: burn at a slow speed and use good media for the best results and to preserve your Sega CD's drive laser from extra wear.samsonlonghair wrote:When Sega CD came out there were no consumer-grade CD burners, so the console has no problem playing burned games. Android Assault and Robo Aleste are good shmups for the SCD. Just try not to step in all the FMV landmines except for the few where camp value overrides crappiness for some people.

Re: Sega CD: Is it worth it?
Seems like I'm just echoing what everyone else has said so far, but the Sega CD does have quite a few great games. Final Fight CD blows the SNES ports out of the water, and the Samurai Showdown conversion is similarly impressive, though you do have to contend with load times. Here's my current list of games well worth tracking down:

Oh, and if you pick up Shining Force CD, be sure to acquire a RAM cart, because without one it's impossible to play the third part of the game. Amusingly enough, the Sega CD's internal memory isn't big enough to hold the two save slots that are necessary to unlock the third book in the game.
