Youtube Videos

Post by RCBH928 »

You might call me stupid
but after one friend told me there are Movies on youtube, I thought he was a liar, then asked if he meant broken 10 min ones. He said no, there are full 90 min movies.
I thought to myself, how can youtube that takes down accounts with copyrighted material feature full movies for free?

After checking the youtube website it appears to be true!
I only log on youtube search for what I want or check something on the front page, I never navigated to the videos section.

Now this is like heaven to me. My wish was always for a place where I can log on and chose what I want to see, like a universal portal for all movies and shows, an time any where no need for hours to download, it plays right now.

Of course you already know that these movies are kind of "meh" but the shows seem good enough.

What are your thoughts on these videos?
How does Youtube choose what movies to list?
Is there anything you recommend to watch?

I liked this line from the release:
I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value.
I like how charging people will make them appreciate the value of it. Plus, this is broadcast TV. The thing I can get for free by hooking up an antenna. You have commercials in your programming already; bump them up a bit more and keep the service free.

Seriousily!

Changing it to a subscription service is going to knock it down a lot. I bet you anything they'll lose a lot more customers then they think.

Unless that is if they go about it the right way.

The way they should do it is first spend some time leaving it free and developing it further. Get a user base hooked on it (I'm pretty hooked so far, but I won't pay for it, the commercials I find fitting). While doing this develope a more streamlined way of sharing it with subscribers.

A) develope apps that make it easy to run through Windows Media Center, Xbox 360, PS3, etc etc... kind of like Netflix is doing. And have a nice GUI that goes with it to make it easy to search through shows and to select shows (something netflix has to do too, you shouldn't have to go on your PC to put movies in the queu damn it!)

B) allow subscribers to get into these advanced services remotely from any thin client.

C) price it below or atleast AT the cost of basic cable (I stress below though because getting it on a TV is going to take a lot of extra hardware which the "normal" user doesn't have and is going to keep users away from the idea), and get the episodes to air much closer to cable air times.

D) commercials should be reduced if not taken out if we're going to pay for the shit. Definitely not increased... definitely not. You know News Corp won't take them out though...

E) Once subscription is implemented leave a slimmed down free service with more commercials then the pay service, and a longer wait time to have shows made available from air date (wait a week or something, kind of like how South Park is on the official South Park website... I mean really, the shows I watch on Hulu are available from the official sites at the same time! Daily Show for instance.). THis would be a good feature to tempt people into wanting the pay service.

F)... there's other things, but my girlfriend is badgering me on my cell right now... ugh... FUCK TXT MESSAGING!

@OP - new post because my last one is long...

not all movies can be placed on youtube in full length.

1) some are broken into sections because the account hosting them isn't alotted the size of the movie to be uploaded in full length. Youtube has only recently been allowing extra long videos.

2) new releases and movies that are considered to be in immediate copyright aren't allowed. But if permission is granted by the copyright holder, they can be on there... especially if the publisher is the account holder hosting the video.

3) Older movies considered part of public domain are allowed of course

4) some illegal movies will make it and won't be caught by youtube immediately. The job to check through all the movies is a rather arduous job performed by people (it's not a thing software could do well automatically). I used to do this very thing for a porn site. My job was to manually go through terrabytes worth of photos and movies and removing anything considered illegal (either under state sex laws, or under copyright laws). Just for a porn site which gets no where near the traffic Youtube gets, it was a job that took about 30 people working around the clock all day every day of the week. And even then some things would slip through unnoticed for a couple days at a time because it was looked over accidently.

Yeah, Hulu is US only. I could just use a proxy and watch what I want. But then again, I might as well just download everything.
