I think Yu Yu Hakusho is a good one for newbs to the genre as well. Decent plot, dub, and character development. It's about a spirit detective, tho the comic is a bit better.
If you like Yu Yu, you may wanna try D-Gray Man. Still being subbed at episode 15.
Ok I read the first page and skipped to the end to post this:
Irresponsible Captain Tylor - it is the only show to keep me both laughing and intrigued through out the entire run since Get Smart. It is from the early 90s and kinda bombed in that it is considered cursed - most of the people that worked on it are dead, up to the guy who designed the original box art, and none of them were really that old. But man is it funny.
i wouldn't call myself a anime fan... I've watched Akira obviousily. I enjoy Ghost in the Shell SAC... but these are extremely mainstream big title movies. Oh I also loved Armitage, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy BeBop, and Metropolis... and ANYTHING Miyazaki has made.
No one has mentioned Black Lagoon, im diggin it has a Cowboy Bebop feel to it (not nearly as good thou) but it entertained me quite well for a few days
fooly cooly to the max! i may be able to write something about that, as i've seen all 6 episodes numerous times, and each episode at least once with director's commentary. what a show! i'm pretty knowledgeable with ranma 1/2, so i can help with that possibly
