Now for quite possibly the weirdest survival horror game I've ever played.

Illbleed

Image

"Illbleed starts with the main character, Eriko, giving a speech for a 12th grade speech contest. She talks about her troubled childhood in which her father, who was a horror theme park designer, tested out all his new traps and props on her until she was 6 years old, when her mother left him. At age 7, Eriko only watched horror movies and then later, at high school, she created the "Horror Movie Research Club". All of Eriko's friends are in it. After Eriko's speech, Eriko, Kevin, and Randy meet outside to discuss Eriko's speech. In the middle of their conversation, Michel excitedly runs up to them holding invitations to "Illbleed" received as a Petco promotion, rumored to be the most exclusive horror theme park to date. The invitations also state that the first ones to clear all the traps and exit alive will be rewarded with $100,000,000. They beg Eriko to go with them, but Eriko remains unimpressed and is certain that the park is just a hoax with cheap props and scares. Smitten with the idea of victory, Kevin, Michel, and Randy all set out for Illbleed and leave Eriko with her ticket. A few days pass without word from her friends. Eriko decides to head to Illbleed in search of them."

So you're running through a trap-filled theme park, with levels designed like fun houses based off horror films. And I do mean trap-filled. The idea of Illbleed is to slowly explore areas because you never know where the next monster or trap will be. While you find multiple characters to make it through levels, death can whittle your supply of characters quite easily, and there's a very complex system of health to maintain. Players must watch their stamina and adrenaline, maintain a steady pulse, and keep themselves from bleeding to death.

There's also a sensory system that will help locate the large number of items that deal with these four health systems, or identify traps or clues. The four senses are sight, hearing, smell, and the sixth sense. There's also a strange item called the horror monitor, which will spot objects the player can check out, but it costs adrenaline(so effectively it hurts you to use it).

Image

The game has a bizarre sense of humor, including critters like the Cake from Hell and Zodick the Hellhog(a parody of Sonic). Levels are named things like The Homerun of Death and Killerman.

Heck, check out this trailer to get a good look of what the game's like:

Unfortunately the title didn't have a PAL release, but both NTSC-J and NTSC-U regions did.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Image

"The plot of the game revolves around protagonist Alexandra Roivas, who is investigating the mysterious murder of her grandfather Edward Roivas. While exploring his Rhode Island mansion, she discovers a secret room containing, among other odd items, a tome bound with human skin and bone. When she reads this book, The Tome of Eternal Darkness, she experiences a scene in the life of Pious Augustus, a respected Roman centurion in 26 BC. Pious is led by mysterious voices to an underground temple, where he chooses one of three mysterious artifacts. The artifact transforms him into an undead warlock, the Liche, and makes him slave to one of three Ancients, powerful godlike beings whose "Essences" are incarnated as the artifacts. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that Pious is attempting to summon his Ancient into this reality, while the powerful fourth "Corpse God" Mantorok is bound on Earth already, apparently helpless to stop it. If this summoning came to pass, the Ancient would feast on the bodies and souls of all living beings, and cast the universe into the horror of eternal darkness."

This game is easily the greatest mindfuck of the entire survival horror genre. Instead of messing with the character, the developers intentionally go after you, at points breaking the confines of the game to hit you where it hurts using their sanity system. As your characters lose sanity, odd things begin happening to them, such as seeing walls bleed, watching statues turn their heads, or suddenly sinking into the floor. Inevitably, the game starts to screw with the player, showing premature endings and credit rolls, adjusting the volume of the game, acting as if the channel has changed, or, scariest of all, bringing up a message that the memory card is being reformatted.

Image

Meanwhile, players will take control of multiple characters over the course of two thousand years that come into contact with the Tome of Eternal Darkness. These characters must work together and find a way to stop the Ancient from being summoned The game plays as a third person action title, similar to Resident Evil or Silent Hill, though to get sanity back as it drains away, you have to kill the various creatures you encounter. There are some folks that willingly let their sanity drain so they can play the game while their character goes raving mad, but hey, that's their prerogative.

been waiting all month for you to get to this one. By the way, just wanted to point out the influence of the works of HP Lovecraft on this game (which is why it's set in RI -- I've seen his grave; it says I AM RHODE ISLAND).

Oh yeah, if you're a Lovecraft fan this is definitely one you should play. The creatures, the Ancients, the plot, it all just reeks of HP Lovecraft, similar to Alone in the Dark and Dark Corners of the Earth(which if I remember correctly I'll be talking about later).

Unfortunately I haven't gotten to see his grave...yet.

Wow, Illbleed and Eternal Darkness both look like awesome games! I've had Illbleed on my radar for a bit now, but I've never heard of Eternal Darkness until now.

Yeah, I would honestly say that Eternal Darkness is a title that any fans of survival horror who own a Gamecube should check out. It didn't sell nearly as well as it should have, and really comes to mind as one of the GC's hidden gems(in fact it's in the Gamecube's Hidden Gems article). Definitely something to check out.

I just watched some youtube videos of the mindfucks that are in this game. Some of them are really good!

I'll be on the lookout for this now. I think I remember seeing it last time I was at the flea market. Is it pretty rare?

While I know it didn't sell well(and sold even worse in Japan, fewer than 20,000 copies sold), I don't think it's that rare. It tends to go for under $20 online, so price shouldn't be an issue. It also won quite a few awards, and has actually found its way into multiple "best games of all time"(was #101 on Nintendo Power's Top 200 Games of All Time list) and "best games of the Gamecube" lists.

Yeah, Eternal Darkness is amazing. I personally suggest you never heal your sanity, as the mindfucks are really really cool. Even when you already know the specific things they will do to you (such as volume adjustment) you will still be fooled by it when it happens.

Can you still finish the game if you let you never heal your sanity? I have the game, but haven't played it yet. It's on my TO DO list.
