TurboGrafx is one system I see thrown around with the word "obscure" a bit too often. The thing held its own against Sega and Nintendo and has an extremely respectable library, even if Americans generally aren't as aware of it as they should be.

I meant to say when I was older I got interested in more older classic consoles I never owned like TG-16. My original post didn't come out the way I wanted to say it sorry for confusion.
Odyssey,Vectrex,Atari 2600,5200,7800,Intellivision,Colecovision,NES,Master System,SNES,Genesis,32X,CD,CDX,Virtual Boy,TG-16,Neo-Geo AES,Jaguar+CD,PSX,PSOne,Saturn,3DO,N64,DC,PS2,Xbox,GCN,Wii,Xbox 360,PS3,GB,GB Pocket,GBC,Lynx,Game Gear,Nomad,NGPC,GBA,GBA SP,GB Micro,DS,PSP,PSP Slim,WS,WS Color,3DS,Vita,PC,iPhone,WiiU
A/V:55" Samsung 3D LED TV, Onkyo 7.1 TX-SR605 HTS My gaming collection
I don't really think of the 3do, Jaguar (not counting cd add-on), or TG-16 obscure. Most of these consoles had extensive advertising and had reviews in the top video game magazines. To me a console has to have sold really poorly (less then 500,000) or not distributed in your country of origin. For instance the famicom sold an adundance of consoles but if you have one in the U.S. I would consider it obscure. The CD-i I am on the fence about It sold okay mostly in europe but was not pushed in the video game world so it went unnoticed by most gamers.
There are only two console I refuse to try and buy the Tandy VIS and the RDI Halycon. the first only has one real game and the latter has only two and still sells for several thousands of dollars. The rest its just a matter of time and luck. I am a collector and gamer so I don't care about completeness in packaging but I do want it all. I am at 36 consoles and handhelds right. Now only like 100 or so more to go.

Agreed. I dont' consider it obscure. Just forgotten. At the time, it was yet to be seen if Genesis or TG16 would beat the other. And in fact, I have some very fond memories of my TG16 at the time that Sega was supposedly doing what Nintendo don't-ed.
I don't know. I tend to consider it a more obscure console if it's something the average gamer won't easily recognize. And let's face it, the average game will know the Nintendo and Sega consoles, and the Sony and Microsoft stuff later. After all, those are the mainstream. Now sure, some other consoles did have advertising campaigns, but that doesn't really mean much if only a few hundred thousand out of several million recognize it. I remember R-Zone commercials...doesn't mean it isn't obscure.
But then again, maybe I'm trying to defend my 3DO, since it's the most obscure console I own...

Good arguement but the 3do sold over two million. Now how did the r-zone do, I personally had one and threw it in the closet after Christmas. Of course ads don't count alone sales and reviews play a factor too. Anyone see a R-zone review in a gaming magazine?
Now to the average consumer they couldn't make heads or tails of the 3DO. But the 3DO while a commercial failure is the 20th best selling console in the world.
Atari (thats all they would call old consoles)
Nintendo (I think that mostly stands for the NES but I have heard it refered to all consoles some times)
Playstation (again just like nintendo)
Xbox (in reference to both reg. and 360)
Gameboy (any hand held)
Sega (used if nintendo not used untill around 96 or so)
If I said Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast the average person would think I was talking about the first part of the bible, a planet, and the best all star cast in a movie.
Best hidden gem games on a system that are unique and only on one platform, and justify buying a console - interesting question.
For me:
Navy Seals on the Amstrad GX4000
Minestorm on the Vectrex, I used to have one, not any more.
Galaga '88 and Bomberman '93 / '94 on the TurboGrafx
Super Mario 64 - N64
Tetris Attack - SNES
Psycho Pinball - Megadrive
Wario Land - Wii
Mario Galaxy - Wii - I did actually buy a Wii to play that (have other games too)
Got quite a few games for the Atari 7800 and ColecoVision at the moment, there are many surprisingly great games on them (Coleco especially), I look on YouTube for game play on a game, then buy on ebay. Titles like Gorf, Pepper II, etc.
I'd say almost anything made my Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega and Sony doesn't really qualify as obscure, with very few exceptions. Sega Master System, Nintendo Game & Watch, Sony PocketStation and PSX (The PlayStation 2 DVR), and the MSX systems are the only obscure things I can think of that were made by the big four.
Sometimes, just the obscurity of a system is justification enough. Still, without good games, it ultimate is nothing but a nice trinket to have around. It's why I can see getting a Wonderswan Color (Guilty Gear Petit 1 & 2, plus Pocket Fighter), Neo Geo Pocket Color (Last Blade, Samurai Showdown, SNK vs Capcom: MOTM), 3DO (various fighting and PC games) and Jaguar (Primal Rage, NBA Jam, AvP, Tempest 2000 and various obscure games). I could also see me getting the Sega CD and Neo Geo CD, simply because of the ease of pirating the games. It's going to take me getting VERY hammered to justify having a CD-i taking up room in my place, however.
