I'm with Luke. I love Metal Gear. I still do, actually.
But the game does have a few major issues. AVGN was right to criticize the binoculars in the game, for example.
Also, Ice Hockey is the only NES sports game I still play, and The Legend of Zelda is still one of my NES favorites.
The list does have a lot of problems, though.

Re: IGN's Top 100 NES Games
but it's a basis of WHAT the list is going by.
"higher standards"? What kind of standards?
A top ## list of games that sold the most. If a list that was made like that some pretty shitty games would end up very high on the list.
A top ## list of games that pushed the console the farthest. Again a lot of unknown shitty games would appear on that list.
A top ## list of games that were beloved. Again I bet we all would find some games that we'd dislike as some people may find a game shit that another loves to death.
That's subjective and bullshit.
This list even says right up front:
It said so from the get go. And seeing as what someone considers a "blast" is all wholey a bias and subjective. Then complain this, "I don't agree with IGN, their opinions do not match my own, they obviousily base their opinion on a game with a completely different standard of merit."
And that is all. It's the main reason I don't bother with IGN, Gamespot, or any other group that creates an online poll or top ## list. Because I know that my standard of merits is COMPLETELY different.
How did we pick the games? We had two conditions: they had to be released in the U.S. and they had to be fun. Whether or not the game was a blast to play is how we decided the order of our beloved NES carts - so don't be surprised if you see an important or influential title below something we loved to play over and over and over again.
As the list goes, based under "what's a blast" I'm considering this a popularity list. And a popularity list goes by what is most commonly referred to as good by the majority (not the hardcore, we're the nerdy guys in the corner). And the top 20 range embody nearly every game that everybody knows and enjoyed from their childhood. Proof in the fact that all those games in the top 20 of the list my own mom, sister, dad, uncle, and so many other people who barely even played games know the titles of. If people not even in the scene know about it, it's probably pretty fucking popular.
I offer up a scenario. How about we here at retro game o rama, create a poll for only us retro freaks. And everyone anonymousily votes across the ENTIRE board. This means no game is left out. A free for all conquering where we go through each game and rank it all the way down. And I bet you my video game collection some games will end up in the top tier that none of us would be pleased to see end up there.

So anyone complaining non-US games weren't included, well that's what the list set out in its mission. I've got a soft spot for Ice Hockey, too. The game design and gameplay are so elegant. And Legend of Zelda is absolutely top 5 material. The gameplay is so tight, the music sounds great even today, there's a huge amount of terrain to cover, and just when you think you've squeezed everything out of the game there's the super hard 2nd Quest--the one I never managed to beat because there was always some battery back-up catastrophe.Limewater wrote:I'm with Luke. After hearing people say that Golder Axe Warrior was better, I gave it a play-through this summer. I didn't much care for it. I think part of my trouble was that I was playing it on an emulator on my Dreamcast. I think that caused some control issues.timewarpgamer wrote: I've got a soft spot for Ice Hockey, too. arion wrote:I hate top 100 lists because the standards are just too low. A list like that is bound to be padded with many unremarkable games. Lower the number higher the standards and i would rather read through a top 10 to maybe top 20 or 30 because all the games listed would be relevant.
Who cares about the Ice Hockey anyway is someone going to protest the fact that game sits at number 100 ?
Also Castlevania 2 is not good enough to mentioned in a top anything list same goes for megaman 4,5 and 6. They are not bad games but they did nothing remarkable.
To me, I'm more interested in the games 100-25, like someone said earlier in the thread who wants to bet SMB3 is number one? Which it should be, but I like looking at these kinds of lists because its more about how you get to number 1 than what is number 1 because there might be a game I forgot about or maybe not heard of before.
Re: IGN's Top 100 NES Games
I thought it was good top 100
SMB3 was a no brainier
I would of put Contra a little higher up, but I'm just being bias there
