you should probably listen to these bands

The Elton John song? Much love.
Both the song and the corresponding album; Madman and GYBR are both the title tracks for their albums. Out of all the 1970's stuff I listen to, those are probably my favorite, #1 and 1a respectively, haha.

My parents raised me on the 60's-80's. Really made for an interesting childhood in the 1990's when me and my peers would discuss our favorite bands...
This would probably be the right time to mention that I own, adore, and can probably sing along with every Elton John album (on real media - not the MP3s you kiddos "collect") from his 40+ year career. Captain Fantastic is, perhaps, my favorite album of all time.

If you don't know much Elton John beyond his Greatest Hits from the 70s or his 90s output (e.g. The Lion King soundtrack, The One, etc.), there's a lot out there to dig into. Each of his albums from the 70s are solid through and through, his best stuff from the 80s continues to shape modern dance/pop music, and his 90s/2000s output has pretty much been a methodical, somber, and successful re-invention as an artist on par with what Dylan has been up to during the same period...

Haha that's awesome, Dave (I can call you Dave, right?). For the past couple days I've had the Tower of Babel stuck in my head from the Captain Fantastic Album. My collection (mp3s and cds--looking to get into vinyl) of Elton pretty much goes up all the way to 1983's Too Low For Zero. Unfortunately, I have a harder time listening to Elton after his voice changed in the late 80's; just wasn't the same for me anymore.

I really don't care much for mainstream music.
it doesn't really get much more mainstream than most of the bands/artists you listed (excepting maybe MSI, atmosphere, and maybe julien-k). what else are you into? like genre specifically. you should check out some of the bands posted in this thread and get a feel for what you like. if you use pandora or last.fm or imeem or whatever that's another great way to check out new bands that are similar to what you like.

i'm not trying to call you out or make fun of you, i like a lot of the artists you listed, just saying that there is a LOT more "underground" stuff that you'd probably really like if you wanted to delve a little deeper.

awesome thread still :)
Genres? Death-Electric, Metal, Industrial, Emo, Punk, Classic Rock, Ungerground Rap, and Screamo. I listen some undergroundish bands, but I dunno though... Where I live, mainstream is defined as the crap on the Top 10 iTunes songs like shitty rap, Miley Cyrus, Nickleback, ect.

Other bands I didn't list: Celldweller, P.O.S., The Used, Aiden, Silverstien, Tool, Brother Ali, Doomtree, Busdriver, Escape the Fate.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

Im assuming that people here would be interested in "retro video game" sounding music on atleast some tiny level and would like to reccommend that you all check out 8bitcollective dot com. There is something for everyone on there.
