So, Wii firmware update 4.2 knocks out the homebrew channel and other homebrew apps like bootmii. What it does that really annoys me is that you can not access the Nintendo internet shop without updating. It’s frustrating because Lost Winds 2 is being released this Monday, I want to download the game, but I have two Japanese Wii games and I don’t want them to become unplayable.
My question is how many of you guys have a modded Wii and have updated your console? Apparently there is a way around updating that will grant you access to the shop channel using WiiScu. Any of you tried this?

There hasn't been anything on the shop channel I've wanted. I know you can save the Homebrew Channel through downloading an update, as the 4.2 menu simply looks for a specific filename and nukes it. Solution is to change the filename.

Re: Your experience with Wii Firmware 4.2
I recently disconnected my consoles from the internet. I was just sick of having to download some kind of stupid 300MB patch everytime I wanted to play a game that I haven't played for a while. I don't really ever play online, I don't download games anymore so whats the point of having it online? I'm just sick of ads, firmware updates, patches and game downloads I just want to play the fucking game dammit.

I'm in the same boat at the moment. I've got HBC because NOA is a clown shoe farce when it comes to releases and I had to buy several Wii titles from Europe and Japan. So they go and release 4.3, now Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth is coming out soon.
I've only seen warnings and posts about waiting it out, right now I believe it's still being worked on.

So, there is no way to access the HBC with a modded Wii as of now, or even play downloaded WiiWare WAD's?

Oh, wait, uh, crap...What year is it?
I meant to say something about them having a less than flattering intelligence level, being over the average American body weight, and also mention that I highly question their sexuality.
Haha, oh Popo...(In Sunset Riders voice) "Ya got me!"

Re: Your experience with Wii Firmware 4.2
Back with news. After some research I found that the solution is really easy. The homebrew channel can update itself to v1.0.6. After that you can do the 4.2 update and the Homebew Channel will still be there, however bootmii and dvdx will be gone. I didn't have those in the first place, but if you want to get them back you can reinstall them the through the homebrew channel.
I did the update, used Gecko OS to get one of my Japanese games going, logged onto the Shop channel, ran a Wiiware game from the SD card, and used the homebrew internet browser. It all worked fine. I haven’t messed with my Wii mod after I did the Twilight Hack a while ago, Team Twiizer has made everything pretty damn easy and convenient. Kick ass work on their part. Here’s where I read the instructions on what to do.

Re: Your experience with Wii Firmware 4.2
All this firmware changes are just crap. Funny thing after updating my HBC still using Firmware 4.0, the homebrew broswer doesn't run anymore, guess I'll have to copy it manually. Got so spoiled by this little app, all homebrew downloaded right on the console. New wads need the new firmware?
