Where Did The Gaming Magic Go?

Post by racketboy »

Not in the games themselves, but the experience leading up to the game....

i use to.....nah i wont lie....when i turn my dreamcast on i turn the volume up high and listen to the little water dropping sound. i have no idea why that has had such a profound effect on me. i guess because it is very harmonious. it fits the title of the console. i love that console. i think too much. i just spent two hundred dollars on a dreamcast package. just for that little noise. o but i cant forget something about nintendo days. remember when you put donkey kong country in your snes? the Rarerware logo came up and had little song of its own. that was one of my favorite parts of the game. and yes i did like the psone's openers. the two logos in the beginning had very nice sounds of their own. im too sleepy to think of anymore i just got off work. laters.

Having to sit through all the nonsense drives me mad.

Put that shit in the credits, or be a little more smooth with your freakin' ad. It isn't even like each logo corrolates.

Boot up and you get a bright white screen with some logo and tingy music. then it goes to a black glammed out logo with completely different music then on to the copyright shit, and this shit, and that... and then FINALLY you get the title screen.

Then it's click here, there, now there and here... type in your name, type in your bday, type in this and that, and oh don't forget this... one last thing, what's your blood type? FUCK YOU!.

Ok now you can play, oh wait before you can play we are going to shove our logos in your face AGAIN, and then we have some boring opening video, yep the same one that if you just waited at the title screen it autoplayed.

Ok now you can play, oh wait, now we have to teach you how to play, yeah A jumps, really? I didn't fucking KNOW THAT. Didn't I get a manual with this bitch?

X-Men 2 on the genesis. One of the only post-1990 games I can think of where you were playing the game the very second you power on. God damn that was cool.

i just woke up and i had a dream about metal gear solid one. and i remembered that little jig at the konami screen. i got goose bumps and am getting goose bumps now. SSSNNNAAAAKKKKEEEE!!!!!!well thats one thing gta got right. they kept short. shit they didnt even have a menu after gta2. just said," we want to reach out to our consumers so we are going to create it where the game starts for you. so therefore you dont have to cut the bong hit short." i thought that was pretty cool and still is.

The start up logos in some games are really going over the top these days. Not to mention in some you can't even bypass them without digging around in configuration files or whatever.

Really, developer/publisher logo and opening cutscene is all you need. And even those should have an option to be disabled in the game settings.

The one that annoys me most of PC is the "designed for Nvidia" or whatever one. Geez, so what about ATI users like me? Do I really give a damn about what freakin video card maker it was "designed for".

Turok had a tradition of great intros even if there was a ton of other logos in between.

Theres more to gaming magic than just intros though. Sometimes with Nintendo titles that are now developed by third parties there is a distinct lack of loving care put into the interface and menu system. I really didn't like the way the menus felt in Mario Kart for GCN compared to the GBA and DS releases.

The magic from the 8 and 16-bit days is still out there though, but I'm too old to know how games feel to kids growing up today. It was a huge deal when Super Mario 3 was coming out for me in the 2nd grade and we as kids were definately talking all about it. I have no idea what games 2nd graders are hoping for these days...
