seems like an appropriate time to bring these up
hard drives and your xbox 5/18/04 (good but a little old)

also found this one about softmod HDD swaps, but seems fairly sketchy to me

Xbox mod advice
I was just thinking about how you could do this softmod larger harddrive without hotswapping, as Racketboy seems pretty wary of this.
It seems that once you install the savegame softmod, you should be able to use UnleashX or EvoX to unlock your stock harddrive. This is scary to do though, since it won't work on the xbox again until you lock it again.
So... make sure you have your eeprom. I'd recommend making an Xbox HDM linux cd w/ your xbox'x EEPROM on it. Once you have your EEPROM on the Xbox HDM cd, it should be very simple to do w/o hotswapping. You'd put the xbox stock HD on primary master, and the larger drive (one you know is lockable, try LiveInfo, like Jubal's link says) on Secondary Master. Boot Xbox HDM, and there's a clone option. Clone your smaller drive to the larger one. Then use the EEPROM on the CD to lock the larger harddrive. Seems like a weird idea, since then you'd be limited to the same amount of room as the stock drive, but once you start up the xbox with the larger drive, you can easily add F and G partitions to use the extra room.

Sure, xbox is best mediacenter ever
Hi, racketboy. I'm an spanish reader of your weblog. Great job, congratulations. (sorry for my bad english)
About xbox, i've got soft-modded xbox (previously chipped but now i prefer exploit option) and i'm very satisfied with so many posibilities: XBMC (xbox media center), emulators, games, xbox Live!...
In my opinion, if you wan't play online live! games, is better softmod option against chip. Don't worry about hotswap method. It's very easy.
Like says other people, best info at xbox-scene.com

thanks for your contribution
I'm not so much worried about the difficulty of the hotswap, but the potential of damaging hardware. As a person experienced with PC hardware, I'm very wary of just yanking out harddrives while the machine is running. I'm sure in most cases it will be fine, but I'm not ready to take that chance.
So what I'm kinda thinking now is that I may just mod it and have most of my content on a server.
A stock 8-10GB drive might be OK with me for now. Sure it would be nice to backup all of my XBox games onto the harddrive, but I could just do my favorites of the moment on the HD and then have my emulators and video content on a server.
Most 2D games should be fairly small (1GB or less), so I should be able to fit a few of those on the drive at once. Does that sound correct?

just looking back on this older post -- why would a chip make a difference on what kind of display would work?Jubal wrote:>I would recommend a Xecuter 3CE.
looks like the Xecuter 3CE goes for about $55, Duo X2 is going for $15
what does the Xecuter 3CE do that the Duo X2 doesnt?
from my surfing the xbox-scene forums I see the Duo gets good reviews for those that are on a budget. Im not worried about running LCD screens or any such, which i know the duo wont do.
anyhow thanks for the help!

Xecuter 3 has the ability to display extra info on a small LCD screen added to the front of the xbox.
