Yep the only thing that can do is leave it in the wall, or put up with the clock bugging you each time you load it up. really crappy.

@casterofdreams AFAIK everyoither console that has a clock also has a lithium battery. Only Microsoft would think of something as irritating as the capacitor

Honestly, during a console's prime lifetime how many times are you plugging and unplugging it from the wall?

Well not really at all during its prime life, but I dont think the Xbox is in its prime amymore. Mine is used as a media centre so its still plugged in, but if I ever get a 360 or PS3 then its goes in the bedroom.

At this point it becomes fairly useless as the disk drive is very picky, the only way to play games is to copy them to the HD but thats not possible in a softmodded machine as it wont load linux if its asking for the time at boot up.

You are wrong on that last one. Mine is softmodded and still has the original hard drive and load games via ftp all the time. XBMC has an ftp and you can load games from your PC, I prefer QWIX because it has a better interface than the others I've tried. Don't worry I also didn't know for quite some time before someone on this forum enlightened me a long time ago. So an xbox with a dead drive is still very useful IMO. You can ftp your games and watch movies from your network shares or usb stick with a usb cable.

All my consoles are plugged in through a UPS for security because of the crappy voltage variation we have here and I would like to turn it off during the day but setting the xbox clocks is so annoying I don't do it. If I set the clock with the default time and date shown, then the softmod doesn't boot and goes to the MS dashboard.

But that's a one time move. The demographic of this site is really the only people who regularly connect and disconnect consoles, due to not having enough outlets/inputs. The average consumer will always have his Xbox hooked up, until the next generation hits and he buys his new console. At that point he usually disconnects the Xbox and doesn't touch it again.

When I say it will be moved to the bedroom I mean it will moved to the bedroom and not plugged in until I want to play on it, but considering I'll have to plug it in for 6 hours prior to wanting to play it so that I can get to XBMC to load a game, then that will never happen.

I know I'm in the minority but I still think its crap design.

Oh, I'm not saying it's good design. I'm just explaining the thought behind it. They save a pretty good chunk of money by using a capacitor rather than a battery.

I always fully unplug everything when I'm not using it. Save the planet dudes, plus I worry about my house catching fire.

The whole no CD-R thing has made me realise just how small my legitimate CD collection is!
