I only listen to this guy. :P

I only venture into MySpace if someone recommends a cover for an old song/bgm. I've got a large back catalogue of much better music from previous decades that I haven't listened to yet. Anyone listened to Ramshackle Day Parade? Now that's good stuff. I'm certain they still make good music but it's certainly become harder to find it. But I'm not a snob as some mainstream music is good for a laugh.

There's a difference between "screamo", "hardcore", "punk", and "prog metal"?

Listen to Kimock, guys.

I can see making that joke about "screamo", hardcore, and punk, but prog metal? I've never heard a prog metal song that could be easily confused with the other three.

Other than using distortion on their guitars (sometimes), and occasionally using power chords, prog metal has practically nothing in common with the first three.

isis was putting out records before pelican or russian circles even existed. calling them a poor man's version of those bands is a misnomer because you can't be a watered down version of a genre you helped to define in the first place.

i think pelican sucks now anyway, that band literally put me to sleep when they played our house a few years ago. russian circles is still awesome, though i think enter is still their best.

"Ramshackle Day Parade" is a really, really good Joe Strummer song.

Isis is one of my favorite bands, and was a HUGE influence on my old instrumental band. I'm not particularly fond of their super-early stuff, and the most recent album was somewhat of a letdown, though.

That said, Oceanic, Panopticon, and In the Absence of Truth are all fantastic albums. I've seen them live several times, and only the show where they opened for Tool sucked. Isis only played three or four songs, and was followed by a lousy Tool show where Maynard was apparently feeling lazy (or sick) and would hold the mic out to the crowd for the choruses of the more popular songs.

Also, no one's mentioned Mogwai or Tortoise in this thread. If you're a fan of Isis or Pelican, you owe it to yourself to listen to both of them. Both of those bands are partially credited with the creation of the post-rock genre. Although Isis is considered to be the founders of "post-metal", along with bands like Godflesh and Neurosis.

Thanks for the links, aaron and everyone else. I will be checking out those other bands now.
