Unique
Unique
Hello
After some thought, I figured out what makes people be retro gamers and why do they own the older systems. And honestly it is what makes me chose my games.
"UNIQUE"
What does that mean?
It means that it is an experience where you wouldn't get any where else. Its not the graphics or the music, it might be gameplay, but it is definitely unique. It is the reason why many of you chose to own the real system, because emulation is NOT unique enough for you.
Mainly they are games, and I can easily spot the unique ones of this generation. They are the games that are one of their kind and new/revolutionary that has no similar thing preceding it.
What are the most unique games through videogame history?
I can see RE1, Mario 64, and Jet Set Radio being one of the easy ones. They are the games that usually set the path for the copy cats.
As for this generation, I can tell that Gears, Drake Fortune, and Brutal Legend being easy ones.

Gears and Drake's Fortune may be very, very good, but I don't think they're really anything that wasn't done before...kingmohd84 wrote:Hello

drakes fortune. don't get me wrong, it's a good game, but its just as if tomb raider and gears of war had a child. or if they made a good indiana jones game, this would be it. none of this merits originality, however.
Oh, come on, don't leave your uncle T-Bag hangin'!

Re: Unique
Unique. Hmmm. In an industry filled with copycats, it's extremely difficult to pinpoint a few games as unique. You might say that Super Mario Bros. is extremely innovative and one of the best games of it's genre, but not unique in that there are so many other games that emulated it.
I totally agree with Jet Set Radio as a unique experience. I can't think of any other game quite as unique as Jet Set Radio. Some unique ones that come to mind are Pikmin, Chibi-Robo, Metal Gear Solid 3, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
As for this generation, hmmmm... Super Paper Mario? Metal Gear Solid 4? Army of Two? Assassin's Creed, perhaps? Hell, I don't know. Drake's Fortune is awesome and one of my favorite games, but this market is saturated with shooters.

Re: Unique
If you are talking about games that are unique to this generation Kotaku had an article about that. They put games with incredibly large and detailed atmospheres in, such as Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Dead Rising was included for the thousands of zombies present at once. Wii Sports because it is one of the few wii games that could only be enjoyed if it were to be played using motion controls.
Now on to my own thoughts. When thinking about what defines this generation, four things come to mind; huge memory capacity, insane processing power, a sort of web 2.0 revamp in the gaming world, and the advent of motion controls.
Motion controls may seem really weak or pointless now but they are merely finding their footing. I think that there be a couple of gems this generation and that in the next it will be much more improved and integrated into the gaming mainframe.
The sort of online community that has been built where nearly every gamer who has a new console is a part of is unique to this generation. Sure there were communities before surrounded around single games or in some other sort of niche but never to this extent.
LittleBigPlanet would be unique because we never really had a console game before that you could make your own levels and introduce them into a community (This is probably not completely true but it has become mainstream). Forge in Halo 3 accomplishes a similar feat.
I might even go so far as adding achievements and trophies to the list of innovations. Sure it's kind of silly but it really does change the way I play games.

Re: Unique
katamari, I'm tempted to say blaz-blue but ive never tried any of the guilty gears, a bunch of down loadable titles like schizoid. hmmm...
really I think part of the problem is that gaming has gained too much popularity, and games are often run like they would be at a Hollywood studio system. It's not about whats fun its about whats profitable, so we see a dime a dozen shooters and sequels, because they make money. Different games in weird genres wouldn't sell as well so they don't get the money needed to be produced.
Or maybe I just wish sega would start making all the crazy goodness they used to embrace again...

Re: Unique
As I see it, there are two definitions of "unique" in games.
There aren't many games that define a mold, for example, Dune 2 was responsible for all the Red Alert, Command & Conqueror and other series; Wolfenstein 3D for Doom, and all the other FPS games; Tetris for all their variation games, etc.
To me, there is no point having a console for its own merits against its competition. What is important is the games it has, and especially the games it has that other consoles don't - ie the unique games. A good example of why the console "it's better because" wars are pointless was the Jaguar - was sold because it was 64 bit; however the games sucked and looked worse than 16 bit games in many cases. Another good example is if you like Mario, like me, then you have to buy Nintendo consoles as that is the only platform that supports them.
So, to me, the quality of a games console are the unique games that console has the others don't, and the quality of the games in question; after all, no point having unique games if they don't stand the test of time!
For example, if a game is on a variety of consoles, it is not unique. Most modern games suck anyway as they are only interested in graphics not gameplay and have low replay value. The Wii for example, has a massive amount of crap games that are complete waste of money, however has a handful of unique and classy games that last the test of time - Mario Galaxy, Warioland, Mario Party. To me, that justifies having the console in the first place - a handful of top drawer classic games - unique to the system.
