What are the best/most fun under-appreciated fighters?

Post by marurun »

We're talking about fighters that managed to miss the mainstream, but not necessarily because they sucked. Perhaps they just didn't fit the times as well, but maybe, in retrospect, they're not as bad as they were perceived.

For that matter, what fighters were over-appreciated in their times?

My votes...

Toshinden series was seriously over-appreciated and over-played. The mechanics were actually quite horrible.
I'd also say the original Mortal Kombat had really poor mechanics and was only loved because of the gore and shock-factor.

As for under-appreciated...
Fighters Megamix for the Saturn was super fun!
Also, Last Bronx for the Saturn was a technically competent fighter that just didn't get the attention it deserved.

My vote is for Capcom's Rival Schools. It was a fun capcom 3d game

I would argue that Rival Schools was actually somewhat high profile in that it got a decent amount of media attention. I think under-appreciated would be more along the lines of, say, Tech Romancer or Psychic Force 2012, where it was largely overlooked.

Aggressors of Dark Kombat was a neat concept, but didnt have enough ump to pull it through. I recommend giving it a run though. And Melty Blood is one that has snuck up on me recently.

I tried melty blood recently too, thanks to UG. PC doesnt have many 2D fighters, so this one is welcome.

rival schools is great, but i think it was mildly mainstream (not as much as sf, kof, tekken, etc etc). i really liked the final ranma game for snes - it was essentially old school street fighter with a taunt command acting as a power attack charge - then if you could pull off your power move it dealt some damage. i must admit ranma 1/2 is my favorite anime, so i may be a bit biased - but the game was simplistic and fun. i used to like the gundam wing fighting game on snes too.

It was a lot better than other anime based 2D fighters on that console. I won't even mention the names...

Maybe you should! I've been floating some column ideas and if the titles fit any of my ideas it might be worthwhile.

Pocket Fighter for Saturn is rad. It has a neat gem collecting system and tons of wierd powerups. The graphics are sweet and the gameplay is interesting. Definately a must for any Capcom fan.

yeah, pocket fighter i would consider a little mainstream too, but it rocks. the playstation version is great too, with its extra modes and whathaveyou. anyone played fighter's history? i remember all the controversy surrounding that years back, capcom trying to sue data east because it was supposedly a street fighter 2 ripoff
