I hear Tokyo is expensive like you can't believe
Hell yes.

When I went I slummed it (student accommodation, backpacker hostels, etc) and it still cost me a fortune.

I think we stayed in a hotel for one night, and it damned near sent us broke!

It's not terribly expensive in my experience. But when I go on vacation I don't really care how much money I spend. I worry about it when I get back. We got a very nice hotel in a busy area (Shinjuku) for about $140 a night. Most meals were about $10 or $15 per person, though we did pay a lot more for a some of our nicer dinners. The little stuff like a beer or a pack of smokes was about the same as in the U.S., though some things like Krispy Kreme or Starbucks were more than I am used to paying in the U.S.

If you are a student or have a lot of bills/debts it's probably not a good choice. If you have a decent gig and are cost-conscious in your planning it's easily doable.
