hi there , im getting some PS1's shipped to me in the next month and want to test them before getting them Modded (ie get a exchange before Modding). What i want to test is if the laser is in good order and doesnt skip , how should i test it ?
a actual PS1 NTSC-US game would be best but want a new game as used games are scratched and will not be a good test.
i was thinking of a Music CD to test or somehow find a new PS1 game somewhere to buy cheap
btw im getting Models SCPH 5501 to SCPH 9001 not the skip prone SCPH 1001
any suggestions welcome

I would say to play something that is FMV heavy. If the FMV's start skipping or pausing then you more than likely have a faulty laser.

Do as hiphop said. This was posted a little while ago by another member and could be useful.

1001s are actually pretty solid if you replace the laser and install a fan
as for the laser stress test, you WILL need to calibrate the laser most of the time. (the SCPH-10x series PSone usually reads CDR pretty well without a tweek though) the games i use to push the drive are DDR 5th mix (alot of streaming audio and its very picky about read errors. the double length songs are a great stress test) parappa the rapper (intro FMV seems to be picky about read errors) and simcity 2000 (they didnt dummy the data out, the intro FMV is horribly picky, even on a legit pressed copy of the game, excellent test) if you wanna get a PS1 modded, i have one chip left. my service is $30 plus shipping and includes a multimode 3 chip, the install, laser stress test, and i will calibrate it as best i can if it needs it. i also clean the laser sled and apply a fresh coat of white lithium grease.

hi executioner + SnowKitty thanks for the extra info provided. The website link is great i actually have saved it with Hypersnap and put in my PSX folder for reference.
nice info and tips you have supplied SnowKitty , i purchased Syphon Filter 2 it has 1 intro FMV a FMV that runs behind the main menu and 1 FMV just before being able to play.

i already have kept your services in mind ive seen you offer your PSX Mod Install talents to others and am keeping you as one of my sources.if you wanna get a PS1 modded, i have one chip left. my service is $30 plus shipping and includes a multimode 3 chip, the install, laser stress test, and i will calibrate it as best i can if it needs it. i also clean the laser sled and apply a fresh coat of white lithium grease.

legit games aren't a very good stress test if you wanna play CDR. if you wanna test CDR on an unmodded deck you'll have to use the swap trick or one of those bootleg gameshark clones that stops the motor so you can swap easier. underground gamer is a good place to get PSX ISOs. i reccomend burning as slow as your drive goes and using high quality CDR like sony or taiyo yuden (verbatim used to be good but they switched to cheap low quality dyes now)s8n wrote:hi executioner + SnowKitty thanks for the extra info provided. nice info again SnowKitty , yea UG is my main source for PSX games and yea ill be burning PS1 CD-R's at x4 speed. Also ive been using Taiyo Yuden DVD-R + CD-R's for the last 4-5 years , in a Dreamcast they sound tight and run faster than cheap media ie they have a better reflection layer.
