How do the PSP collections fare in terms of accuracy?
How do the PSP collections fare in terms of accuracy?
I was looking up info on Sapphire, the enormously expensive PC Engine CD shmup, when I noticed there's a PC Engine collection on PSP for the series, which includes Sapphire. I've also known about the Gradius and Parodius collections, and then noticed a Soldier Collection as well. The question is, assuming I were to get a later model PSP that can output to a television (I have the original PSP), would any of these be worth getting (besides the one that contains Sapphire, for the price alone)? I'm a stickler for getting the best ports, so I'm not sure how all these shmup compilations fare. Also, the fact that it would involve me getting a new PSP means price (aside from Sapphire) isn't as large of a bonus. Not having easy access to a stick is a negative as well, but I still need to mod one of my current sticks to use on PC Engine anyway.

In my experience, I found that the Samurai Shodown Collection sucks on the PSP.

These PCE collections are cool. I'd pick them up if they see a US releases - in the meantime why not just run a PCE emulator on your PSP as it would address your "accuracy" concerns...

I think crux has repeatedly shown to follow a strict no-piracy rule.dsheinem wrote:These PCE collections are cool. I'd pick them up if they see a US releases - in the meantime why not just run a PCE emulator on your PSP as it would address your "accuracy" concerns...

Indeed. Especially when a commercial release is readily available.
Though, not entirely strict. MAME, namely.

At one time or another I owned the Gradius, Parodius, and Salamander collections.
I can assure you they're all quite well done though IIRC none of them support coop. Otherwise they're flawless ports.

Based on my experience, the Hudson PC Engine shooter collections are emulated. I have the Best Collection with Sapphire and right before it starts up it displays the PC Engine CD startup screen for a split second.

How is Sapphire, as compared to other shmups?
I've often read that it's not worth the investment (arcade card + expensive game)
The downer to that PSP collection is that the other games on that disc are text heavy, correct??

Yes, the other games in the series are visual novels, more or less. And Sapphire has been noted as being the most mediocre of the Hudson Soft shooters, though I've seen glowing reviews for it as well. If I bother I guess I'd get the PSP collection. I paid $150 for Radiant Silvergun, but $400-1000 for a single game, nonetheless a game that isn't Radiant Silvergun, is fucking absurd. Well, ok, I'd pay $1000 for a certain controller, but that's... different.
For the other PC-Engine shooters I'm missing, though, I think I'll shell out for the Hucards.
