If I am able to pay off my debt, I get to turn around and go right back into debt so I can go back to school for game design. It's kind of symbolic that I'm selling my game collection in order to be able to create games, but it is still kind of painful.
What area of game design are you planning to go into? software development? art?
Hey onemanfilmcrew a quick question, I was just wondering since you live in Champaign will you be attending the University of Illinois when you go back to school? I just wanted to say I love that school if you are going there. My twin sister goes there. That campus is beautiful.
so sorry to hear this but getting the degree in something you love will only help you in years to come, I recently finished mine (in may) in Economics and some how got a job as a network engineer...
Good luck with your sales, I'm sure if you post some of the rare stuff up here it'll go to a good home that can really appreciate it and not someone trying to mark it up.
I'm planning to go to The Flashpoint Academy in Chicago ( /www.flashpointacademy.com ). I went up this week for a tour and got a really good vibe from them. I'm going back up in a couple of weeks to sit down with the head of the game design program.
My goal is to go into the writing element of design. Crafting the characters, storyline, etc. I've been writing for as long as I can remember, and there are a lot of stories I want to get out there.
"Try to hold on to a few things at least. Not necessarily the most expensive, but a few that you actually enjoy. Still going to need some time to unwind in there. "
And I am def. going to hold on to a few things. Like my Phantasy Star II game (because it played such a huge role in my childhood, making new friends, and teaching me to spell. Full story at http://www.retrogamingtimes.com/rtm61/#phantasy ). I think I'm going to hold on to my sealed copy of Final Fantasy, an Atari Prototype or two, and a couple of DS/Gameboy games that I still play on a daily basis. I also have a few dozen sealed PS2 games that I picked up and set back as an "investment". Didn't pay more than $5 for them, so it can't hurt them to sit in a storage container for a few more years
sucks man good luck with the sales. I'm in the process of getting rid of most of my personal possessions (computers games etc) already sold off my car a little while back. I now share a car with my family or my girlfriend (not sure how much longer that will last sadly) until I can get some debt paid and a business going. Really tough to find work but a business could work very nicely for me
i've heard nothing but good things about flashpoint from friends in chicago, they all say they love it. most of them are in the graphic design program so i dunno about the whole game design thing, but i'm sure you'll enjoy it. chicago is a beautiful city, also.
i've bought and sold a lot of video games and my reason was always to pay off debt, but be sure that you keep track of how much you are bringing in and SAVE it, put it in another checking acct or a savings acct or something and don't touch it, then when you're done selling everything or a loan payment pops up, you'll have it ready to go. my problem was i always was careless with where the money went so i sold all this stuff and then it felt like i had nothing to show for it. good luck, man, i just lost my job at the end of last month so i feel you. i will probably be parting with some more things i have stockpiled.
I'm probably in a similar boat... being a photographer and soon to be Bachelors in Graphic Design, the industry itself seems pretty grim. I'll probably hafta do with selling photography books, a little self publicizing and doing something 9-5 until something comes my way. I used to DJ professionally and it pays pretty well, $300-$500 a gig. Now I work 12 hour days on weekends as a manager of a Play N Trade until I get out of school.
I feel for ya guys... just hang in there!
I'll try to help ya out in any way I can...... I'm usually interested in looking for Sega Saturn stuff, some Genesis stuff and am actually decently interested in finding a Turbo Grafx 16 if its the right price and I have some money to throw at one
Got: Atari 2600, Atari 7800Pro, Commodore 64, Odyssey 2, Sega Master System, NES, Genesis Models 1-3, Nomad, Game Gear, Sega CD Model 1, Sega 32x, SuperNES, GameBoys, GameBoy Pocket, GBC, Sega Saturn Model 2, GBA, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2 Slim, Nintendo DS Lite, Xbox 360, Gamecube, PS3 Slim
Man I kind of feel your pain... I too lost my job last May and have been sitting around unemployed ever since. Thing is though, I had the advantage of knowing well ahead of time that I would be losing my job so I got a head-start on selling things I didn't need, like two of my three motorcycles... but eventually it came down to to the point where I needed to sell my video game collection. Or at least a large part of it.
I had to let go of my entire Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance, and Gameboy collection, which netted me a few thousand dollars and let me stay afloat for some time. Even after that however I sucked up my pride and moved in with my parents. There was no way in hell I wanted to part with any more of my collection which mostly consists of Dreamcast titles I will probably never find again if I sold them.
But the selling process was actually beneficial to me as it helped me refine my collecting philosophy. I used to just try and collect as many games as possible for each various console out there and that resulted in a lot of "fat" as I call it--games that I don't particularly give a damn about but that are there for the sake of "completion". Now my collecting objective isn't about collecting as many games as possible, it's about collecting games that mean something to me in some way.
So one way to look at it is that perhaps selling your collection will help shape your own collecting philosophy, or will create one for you if you don't already have one?
Well, I'll take a look at your sales as I'm a huge collector of hand-held games. Obviously given my situation I can't splurge but I can justify a few copies if I find something I'm wanting.
