Best graphics on Saturn?

Post by The Apprentice »

I saw somewhere an article on this site for the best graphics on Dreamcast and I was wondering if you guys could help me out, seeing that a lot of you have Saturns, could point me in the right direction for really good graphics on the system, prefferably 3D, because I will be throwing a huge party at my house in about two weeks and I want to impress my friends and convice them this thing wasn't a crazy waste of money. (Whew, that was a long sentence!) Any help would be great.

This will be a good start:

The Saturn section is at the end

But again, it didn't really focus on 3D.
But to rattle off a few titles: Virtua Fighter 2, Dead or Alive, Exhumed/Powerslave

If anyone else can come up with some other great suggestions, maybe I can compile it into a "best graphics" post

Burning Rangers is supposed to be quite nice 3D (I haven't played it, myself), and I think NiGHTS is pretty, if nothing else. Deep Fear is a nice Resident Evil substitute that's supposed to be better in a number of ways. Quake is always a nice title to use because the Playstation couldn't handle Quake properly. PS uses triangles and the Saturn uses "planes", or, effectively, rectangles, and so the walls and corridors of Quake were easier to program on the Saturn.

Burning Rangers is interesting graphically. It does alot of things the Saturn shouldn't be able to, but really poorly. Transparency, large environments, and other things makes it "advanced" graphically but its glitchy and hard to look at nowadays. It uses a version of the Nights engine I think, but it doesn't seem as stable.

As for 3D games that will impress on Saturn? There aren't many. The system has passable 3D games that are AAA games, but they just don't look very good. If you want to impress your friends with a Saturn you need a pile of Capcom fighters and 2 6 button pads. Maybe some aweome Japanese shooters. Thats why the Saturn still isn't crap.

Best 3D:

Panzer Dragoon 2 (great art style, lighting, transparency, and huge boss battles)
Virtua Fighter 2
Decathalete (really)
Layer Section 2
I like old games
I like new games

Best 2d is no question Princess Crown. 3d however is alittle trickier, as you can tell by the previous post. It comes down to personal taste for most of the games. Personally I find Burning Rangers to be quite beautiful and a whole lot of fun, yet I cannot get into NiGHTS. The games Ive used to win people over are:
Virtual On - with or without twin sticks
Waku Waku 7
Zero Divide
Gunbird
Donpachi/DoDonpachi
Xmen Children of the Atom
Daytona USA
Saturn Bomberman
Bubble Symphony

So yeah alot of two player 2d games, but that is why I bought more of them recently. And Bomberman is always fun, even with only 2 players, but a multitap and another chunk of controllers is the best way to play it.

Well I never said I don't appriciate 2-D games, I was just trying to prove the power of the system to my friends. I actually like the small ammount of 3-D on the system because I don't have to buy as many games! Also I was looking at Sega Ralley as my next buy.

The Japanese-only Saturn version of Grandia seems to have very nice, detailed, and colorful graphics. I picked it up awhile ago, havn't really had a chance to play it though.

Well don't expect the 3D to outperform the Playstation on many cases.
If you compare the Dead or Alive ports, the Saturn should come out on top.
It's really all a matter of who was programming the game and how much effort they put into maximizing the hardware.

Well I definately reccomend Sega Rally. definatley the BEST racer i have ever played, even more than GT4 on the PS2. despite lacking the number of cars, courses, and graphics that other racers boast, it is fast, exciting, and extrememly fun. the car handling is amazing as is the graphics, simply because they maintain a constant, high framerate and you never se slowdown. the game is full of drifting, speed, and the visuals never let you down.

either that or its just the best out of the 4 sega saturn games ive found in london so far. i should get on ebay more. canada is like a wasteland of sega cds and saturns.

if you have the choice get the japanese sega rally, the us version was released early and some stuff is cut out (i forget what, exactly..)

my take (what wasn't already mentioned)...

2D:
lunar games
rayman
saturn bomberman
any capcom or snk fighter

3D:
gungriffon II (MUCH better graphically than the first, even if it is missing a cool CG intro)
drift king syutokoh battle 97
winter heat (nice high resolution)
bulk slash

i hear that some of the more obscure japanese rpgs are very nice graphically too. check out www.segagagadomain.com , there's a lot of good saturn info there. mostly japanese stuff, though.
