Yes. I was actually thinking about posting that clip to the halloween music thread, but I didn't want to go looking for it.
You mean THIS clip?!

Sweet Home (スウィートホーム, Suīto Hōmu?) is a survival horror game that was released for the Famicom in 1989. It was developed and published by Capcom. The game is related to the Japanese horror film of the same name.

Though more of an RPG, Sweet Home served as the main inspiration behind Resident Evil. The first Resident Evil borrowed many elements from Sweet Home, including the mansion setting, the puzzles, the item inventory management, the emphasis on survival, and even the "door" loading screen. While survival horror elements can be found in some games as far back as Haunted House on the Atari 2600, Sweet Home is "generally considered the turning point" for horror games and had a more direct role in establishing the survival horror genre due to its strong influence on Resident Evil

A tip for anyone trying it out today but is too lazy to read about the game: save often. Abuse save states. Apparently when a character in your party dies- that is it. They are dead. Forever.

Part 1 of a walkthrough by 'play it through.' He talks about the game a bit in the beginning.

I'm looking forward to cracking this game. Being that it is a famicom game I'm going to have to scrounge through underground gamer to find it, but I'm sure it is up there. Apparently it has been translated. Looks like a blast and wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise. Thanks ack!

*edit* I found it on UG easily. I don't see the harm in letting people download it as it is a 20 year old fan translated game. However if I'm totally out of line, I'll gladly pull it from this post (or whoever mods this post can). Otherwise- download away. I'm running it perfectly on FCE Ultra GX for the wii. Had to update to the newest version though.

Yeah, no problem. That's what I'm hoping happens with at least a few of these, that somebody will notice and find a game they've never heard of but want to play.

Great list Ack. Almost forgot Phantasmagoria existed, it was 7 disc! Made me remember my first "multimedia kit" for the PC. There are a few I've never played or seen, but I see no mention of 7th Guest! Ju-On for the Wii has a great spooky atmosphere so its worth mentioning. Another one I really enjoyed was Clive Barker's Undying for PC.

Thanks for the kind words. Truthfully I debated with myself a bit about putting in the 7th Guest, but I decided instead to go with Phantasmagoria and Mansion of the Hidden Souls. There are a lot of titles I could have included that just didn't make the cut, including some that I really wanted to(such as Juggernaut for the PS1), but I just had no room for. I might do this again next year however, turn it into some kind of feature, and post completely different games. If I do, 7th Guest will definitely get a mention.

Well, it's technically October 8, so I'll go ahead and post some stuff on the next game, Darkseed(also known as Dark Seed).

Image

"Mike Dawson is a successful advertising executive and writer, who has recently purchased an old mansion in the small town of Woodland Hills. As soon as he moves into the house, he falls asleep and has a nightmare where he finds himself in a place called the "Dark World" where it is inhabited by inhuman creatures called "Ancients". They forcefully hold Mike down and use an alien machine that implants an object called a "Dark Seed" into his skull. After Mike wakes up, he has three days to solve the mystery of the town before the "dark seed" erupts from his brain and the "Ancients" take over the real world."

Image

Yep, if you can't tell already, Darkseed is notable for prominently featuring the artwork of H. R. Giger(whose most well known design is probably the creatures in Alien). Unlike most point and click adventure games, this game is on a strict time limit, so it is possible to make enough poor decisions for the game to become unwinnable. Don't expect this to be a cakewalk.

Here's a trailer for it on YouTube:

There's also a direct sequel to the first game, Darkseed II:

I have the first one for PC. It took nearly an hour to install from the 5 floppies on my 386 back in the day. I never made it very far after crossing over on the 2nd day. I've meant to have another go, even if with a walkthrough, but I just have too many games. I always found it odd that this was released on Saturn in Japan.

A good plan. If you do get a second sweet home, like i was saying before, was the inspiration for resident evil so it is a pretty good game to play as an "extra credit" to together retro

No worries jfe2- enjoy it man. I played it for a couple hours yesterday and just a word of advice: pay attention to the hints you get when you flash your camera on the paintings and the ones you see written in blood. Due to graphical limitations a lot of things that you need to know are in those hints and give no indication on screen when you come across something you need to do. It took me forever to find that damn mallet to crush the rocks. Thing about that, is that i only really have myself to blame. I read the damn clue.

Despite the difficulty- i really loved sweet home.

Oh- and i just wanted to say real quick- you guys probably shouldn't post roms! :)

Oh man! I completely forgot about that game. I played through it when it came out and loved it. Really spooky for the time. I've been meaning to reinstall it for years now. If i remember right, you get death's syth at some point? All I remember is just swinging that thing like crazy at everything that moves.

I'd be into that. I think that much like the horror genera of film, horror games don't really get the nod they deserve. For whatever reason most of them just aren't on people's (myself included) radar. Plus, I like having this shotgun blast of games. It is like a sampler platter. I get to try out a game every day (or so) and if i like it, i can come back to it. That is mostly how i game these days (as opposed to myself as a kid, playing every game completely before moving on) anyway.

I think i'm going to skip over darkseed only becuase i'm really not a fan at all of hr giger and i'm sure it would skew my experience of the game. However, i know i have a copy of Mansion of the Hidden Souls around here somewhere that i've never played.... so yeah, i'll probably crack that.
