using protection

Post by molotovwars »

No incoming hollaback thread, don't worry.

I'm using a family members' older computer until I decide on and purchase a replacement (viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16133) and I would like to make sure the computer is protected.

On my now toast computer I was using AVG Anti-Virus, but I found that it ran a bit slow. I may go back to using it again, but I wanted to know what programs you guys ran to protect and clean up your computers. I also run Spybot Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I've used Hijack-This on occassion, but thats more for if I have a specific problem.

Suggestions? Go!

AVG fully updated. If something goes to hell I have updated versions of Malwarebytes, Calmwin, Spybot, and Adaware on removeable devices so I can run them from safemode.

That and anything shifty I do is on a linux box...

Hah... Holoback.

Anyway, I use livecare in combination with ad-aware and have never had any problems. I also back my files up to a networked HD once a day. I'm sure others will have different experiences and better advice though.

I believe it also helps to keep your less scrupulous browsing/downloading to a specific computer (that isn't necessarily on the network).

Ahem, Holodeck sir...... :wink:

EDIT: Great thread title by the way, it's one of those that just sneaks up and surprises you when you're scrolling through the list.

Anyway, I use Norton only due to the fact that my mom thought that buying it and installing it would fix our family's virus riddled computer that got fucked up by my sister looking for myspace themes. Before that I just went vanilla with the OS and never had a problem ever, so Norton honestly just feels like a drain on my machine really.

Currently I use Kubuntu. Only because I got sick of using Malwarebytes, Ad-aware, Avast, and Spyware Blaster. They sell some chips on DX that will restore your PC to a designated state every 24 hours no matter what happens to it. Seems like a good idea if you have a setup you know you want.

There is also a "sandbox" program were you can put new software to test it out until you know it is safe.

Nice. I didn't even realize how badly I butchered his user name. I won't edit it though.
