PS1 problems, broken spindle

Post by klohs »

I wanted to ask a question here about playstation 1. I got today a 5502 model/chipped.
It's spindle is broken. (Look something like this

, but I have 2 orange parts vissible). The issue is, it has slow loading times and FMVs skip (as does some ingame music). I think it is either the motor or laser, but can a broken spindle cause something like this ? What do you need to do to break those things anyways? When I put the console on it's side the load times improve significantly and FMVs skip much less, so it is pretty much playable.

It's either the spindle's state, or whoever owned it before wore out your PS1's drive and it isn't tracking properly anymore.

hiya klohs , i would replace the spindle if Slow Loading times , FMVs skip and stuttering Audio persist try a Alcohol Q-Tip to Laser Clean , if that doesnt help it may need a Laser POT Tweak (3rd link), also read up on the last link i am giving you it has multi info that may help.

It's a launch PS1. Therefore it suffers from the same old wear and tear that all well used launch consoles have. Simply put, the original PS1's used a plastic drive assembly so as the disc was being read and the laser is moved up and down it's tracks it slowly wears it down to the point that the laser isn't aligned properly anymore... Unless it is turned on it's side/upside down (depends on the system and the amount of wear on the laser). There is NO fix for this problem, short of buying a new laser assembly for the same model, which inevitably will suffer the same problem. Avoid any PS1 under SCPH 7x serial number.

Wait a minute Niode, the launch systems were the 1000 (Japan), 1001 (US), and 1002 (Eur). His is a 5501 which is a later system revision circa 1997.

EDIT!: Fixed spelling.

Oh I see, my mistake. I didn't notice the orientation of the laser.

Carry on.

Try taking the knife out and see if that helps.

broken spindles can cause problems with reading CDs. you can usually find a suitable replacement on an old discman. just be sure to get the height on the motor spindle just right cause that can throw off the focus of the laser if its too high up or too low down
