So basically it wasn't enough to just void the warranty of people who modify their console, Nintendo had to make people download an update that crashes people's consoles if they've modified them.
If I pay $250 for something, I will do what I damn well please with it, with the understanding that the manufacturer will no longer back the warranty. But purposely taking down people's systems is rediculous.
I fucking hate this generation and all the patches, updates, and digital content. At this point systems are becoming so much like computers that people might as well just play roms on emulators. At least computers are open to modification, whereas consoles are closed systems that take a lot more work to create workarounds for.
The exciting world of console updates: Wiis crash
Re: The exciting world of console updates: Wiis crash
I'm pretty upset as well. I messed around with that homebrew scene a LONG time ago and was planning on deleting all that crap as soon as I got it back from some friends of mine who are borrowing it so that I could get Cave Story and Icarian (among other things). What the hell?! I guess I'll just have to wait until they release a safer menu version 4.3 or something

Wow. I really can't believe that Nintendo would do this. Speaking of which, is this legal? They are breaking something that you purchased and therefore own. Then again, it's more than likely it's covered in the terms and conditions. I hate crap like this.

This upset me too. There is no reason to get the update too; it does nothing, but knock out homebrew. Wiibrew.org already has found a way around it, so if you want firmware 4.2 for your Wii and the homebew channel you can still have it. Can you download Wiiware/virtual console games without having the update?
I feel like the final straw for me from Nintendo will be them (for some stupid reason) not releasing Sin and Punishment 2 stateside. Fingers crossed.

Doesn't bother me one way or another. I haven't felt the need to mod my Wii. Console companies have been trying to stop people from modding their systems now they just finally have away. You don't have to update its a choice you make just like modding your system.
Snes, N64 or any other system from the yester years you couldn't update. I think its fine if I really want my system modded there will always be people that find loop holes.

I keep my wii offline for this very reason. It is a great homebrew console. I'll skip the games that'll make it crash thanks!
