AFAIK, the newest mods don't care what version you have, or which version of the dash you have. Basically, any model will work, in other words.
Depending on what softmod you use, it can be as simple or technical as you want. I haven't researched a simple softmod for larger harddrives yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
The way I did it was probably the hardest way, and still, it only took a few hours for everything.
If you're not gonna swap harddrives right away, I'd say Krayzie's Savegame is the simplest *technically*, but you'll have to buy a few things. You'll need an xbox->usb adapter to plug in a USB device to the xbox, and a way to get the savegame onto the usb device too. The 2 standard ways to do that are either using a gameshark, or another modded xbox.

What makes them technical or easy? I don't mind technical depending on what it is. I'm a techie guy, but there are some things that I'm not familiar with. Maybe my biggest concern is something that is easy to mess up and as a result, make your Box unusable.
Ok, the way I did it costs nothing. You need to download a pc linux called xbox hdm. You burn it to a CD and boot from it. Then, you need to open the xbox AND the pc, and get them really close to each other. What you're gonna do is called "hot-swapping". The term may be familiar to you, since it's not really an xbox thing specifically. At a certain point, the linux distro will wait, and you start up the xbox long enough for it to unlock the xbox harddrive, then swap the IDE cable over to the PC. Then you'll be able to access the files on the xbox.
There's a softmod pack for the xbox hdm linux cd that lets you just type "softmod" when you get to the linux prompt, and it does the work. This way is *pretty* dangerous if you haven't backed up the xbox harddrive. If you wanna do that, you have to do the same hot-swap, but while you're in windows, and use a program called.... I don't remember. Once you back up the harddrive, then you apply the softmod, hook the xbox hdd back up to the xbox, and you're done.
I consider this a pretty technical way, although you are just using a script. It's a lot more technical than moving a savegame onto the xbox and running Splinter Cell, and for the same effect (as long as you aren't installing a bigger harddrive).

Also, no you cannot play xbox games over a network connection. You mean streaming, like GC, right?
You CAN do this with emulators, especially those made by XPort.

Ah, I just looked up that windows xbox hd backup program. It's called "HDD_Driver". Stupid name.

You have to swap an IDE cable to a running PC?
Isn't that kinda harmful to the PC?
Yes. Since you are swapping cables while the power is on, this can possibly cause electrical damage. Also, there is a difference in ground voltages (this can be over 100V!). NB: A good safety precaution is to connect the metal chassis of the Xbox to the PC case with a wire (i.e. alligator clips).
If you plan to do a lot of softmods, then I recommend using a memory card and exploitable game, instead of hotswapping all the time. You can use a gamesave exploit to get FTP access to the drive."
So some of the other methods don't require hot-swapping?
the Krayzie's Savegame softmod doesn't require you to even open your xbox, although you need to buy a few things. I'm still not sure how to upgrade your harddrive w/o hotswap, but there may be a way.
