I'm not sure whether that was id's intent but I am with you on this one. Doom 3 did make me jump out of my socks on several occasions. Whenever the subwoofer started rumbling I knew I was in for a nasty encounterLuke wrote:Am I the only one who considers Doom 3 a horror game?

For some reason, the xbox version didn't startle me, but the PC version sure did. Methinks it's in the control set up.Pulsar_t wrote: I'm not sure whether that was id's intent but I am with you on this one. Doom 3 did make me jump out of my socks on several occasions. The Racketboy Steam group should host some Left4Dead events to celebrate Halloween.
Oh, and Friday the 13th was a terrible NES game.

Yes. Yes I am.Luke wrote:Wait...Aren't you in the South East?Ack wrote: Yeah, they call me the Keyboard Kid. Fastest hands in the West.

And Doom 3 did a decent job of providing thrills, though after a while you knew when stuff was going to happen. Truthfully, it felt like Serious Sam with a lighting problem to me.
You mean a survival horror article? I generally prefer doing genre lists for individual consoles, and I did one for all of the Dreamcast survival horror games a few months ago. I've also written another article that might interest you, so keep checking the main page in the coming weeks.noiseredux wrote:Ack, y'know this would make a pretty badass feature?

Re: october means a month of horror games
Well, I might pull one off before the end of the year. I've been planning on doing another article on a different genre altogether, and there's that beat 'em ups article for the SNES I promised...what, six months ago? I kinda need to get the ball rolling on that. But a solid Gamecube horror article would be good. I'd considering doing one for the console for a little while, but I've been avoiding it because I know I'll get flak no matter what I label Resident Evil 4 as.noiseredux wrote:I remembered the DC one. Re: october means a month of horror games
you step away for a day- and the thread got epically large. I'm going to try to reply best i can...
The fatal frame series has always been on my list of stuff to play, but fuck are they still expensive. I don't really want to spend over 20 bucks on a ps2 game these days. Still- they look fun and scary as shit. These videos come to mind:
Dude! i totally forgot that silent hill remake for the wii is coming out. I think i'll check that guy out. It is pretty much the king of the horror video game genera.
A buddy of mine played the thing when it came out, and i remember being really into it then. Looking forward to cracking it for myself. Maybe watch the movie first, and then play the game seeing as the game takes place after the end of the flim. I think the game is a sleeper hit.
Deadspace is super addictive. Something about it just makes you want to 100% that game. I love it. One of my favorite experiences in this generation of consoles.(-_-) wrote:Just finished getting 100% trophies for Deadspace. Awesome game. I have Silent Hill 4, and origins to get through, as well as the entire fatal frame series. I think I'll try to finish a few of them this month. Maybe spend halloween playing through fatal frame with some friends.
Also curious about The Thing. I've heard it's pretty good and I've seen a few intriguing videos on youtube that made a game out of the fear mechanic and your "squad"? There are always a couple of xbox copies for like 5 bucks at a local pawnshop.

really? The original alone in the dark doesn't look like it holds up that well. And the new game looked really really bad. You were into it limewater?Limewater wrote:If you haven't played it, I suggest the original "Alone in the Dark."nickfil wrote:Any other suggestions for me to try out? I would totally put eternal darkness on the list, but i just recently watched a friend play a bit of it and it is just too fresh for me. But it is a fantastic game.Luke wrote:Halloween is my second favorite holiday, I already have the house decorated. I'll probably play RE 4 and Eternal Darkness:Sanity's Requiem.

For sure doom 3 is a horror game. That game scares the shit out of me. Plus, it pushes the xbox pretty hard. The game looks fantastic.Luke wrote:Am I the only one who considers Doom 3 a horror game?
I'd be down for at least getting a few rounds in with fellow racketers if you guys are into that. I just need a heads up as to when it is happening.J T wrote:The Racketboy Steam group should host some Left4Dead events to celebrate Halloween.
thinking maybe just a 30 days for horror article. A horror game suggestion for every day might be fun.Ack wrote:You mean a survival horror article? Well, I've only ever played the first one, since I've heard nothing but bad things about the sequels. Apparently, the team that made the first one actually left Infogrames over conflicts regarding the direction of the sequel. But the first one is excellent, in my opinion.nickfil wrote:really? I am not entirely sure what you mean about how it "holds up." Graphically, it isn't the prettiest game in the world by a long shot. The human characters have fairly harsh features, but the monsters look just fine. I believe it would run on a 286. But they did some cool, progressive stuff with the animation, so it's actually very smooth on more modern systems.
It has a lot of the characteristics generally considered "Resident Evil-ish." It has 3-D characters on a pre-rendered background. It has odd camera angles designed to give you jumps. I recall a closet you can enter that is actually viewed from just above the floor, looking up at the player, which is pretty excellent. The game featured the tank-style controls Resident Evil used later. At the beginning you get to choose whether to play as a male or female protagonist (though they play the exact same scenario in this case). You begin the game unarmed, and are low on ammo for the duration. It has several "jump" moments. Even playing the game in 2001, when I first experienced it, I was legitimately frightened several times. Oh, and when you go down, there is a cool shot of a zombie dragging your unconscious body to an alter.
The game is a whole lot more supernatural than the RE games, though, with a strong Lovecraftian influence. Also, the puzzles are less ridiculous. Well, they're kind of ridiculous, but they make a lot more sense in the context of that game than the ones in the Resident Evil games do there. Despite the game losing a bit of steam toward the end, I had a blast with it.

Re: october means a month of horror games
Ah, so a thirty days of horror? Well, unfortunately we're already a bit into October, so researching and sprucing up an article would take too long, but how about I come up with something for the forums, just a kind of "Hey guys, keep doing the Together Retro for the month, but every day why not go check out a gameplay video or something of this game and see what you think?"nickfil wrote:thinking maybe just a 30 days for horror article. Hell, give me a few hours and I'll post something in this thread for you to mull over the rest of the month. Sound good?
