Mother-ish games?
Just curiuos, what games would you recommend for fans of the Mother series? Certainly they are not typical RPG's, so... ?
Re: Mother-ish games?
Cave Story.
It's not an RPG, but I get the same level of love from the game.

I've heard that Contact for DS attempts to be the spiritual successor to Earthbound. There are some pretty obvious similarities like the simpler graphics (on the top screen, at least), strange humor, and the breaking of the fourth wall.
I haven't played it enough to properly judge it, so I can't really give you any insight on the quality of the game. It's got pretty average reviews.

If you haven't played all three Mother games, do that.
StarTropics NES
Secret of the Stars SNES
Live A Live SNES
For Frog the Bell Tolls GB
Tomato Adventure GBA
Contact DS
Chulip PS2
Opoona Wii
There's also a western action/rpg on the Super Famicom with a cowboy kid that's a bit of a cross between Zelda and Mother in style, but I can't recall the title for some reason.
I love quirky Japanese games.

I agree with what hellhammer said. Opoona Wii, while not as good as earth bound it has the same sort of vibe, and the jobs are pretty fun. Since the Wii is rpg starved you should at least try it out. I paid $8 for my copy.

I haven't played it, and its more of a text adventure game, but it certainly appears to be quirky.

Haha, I can't tell you how long I've wanted to play that game. It just looks so absurd.Hobie-wan wrote:I haven't played it, and its more of a text adventure game, but it certainly appears to be quirky.

Also, that western game I couldn't remember earlier is called 'Gunman's Proof'. There's even an English translation for it now!

I've played Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom. Yes, it is very quirky. It plays a little bit like a Shadowgate/Deja Vu style game. It's still enjoyable today because it is just so strange. Its oddness is timeless.
