Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

october means a month of horror games

Post by nickfil »

So it is October. A buddy of mine is doing 30 horror movies and showing one a day. Pretty fun.

Got me thinking that i should play as many horror games as i have time for. Not that i'm going to cover a huge amount of games (as i have little free time), but here is what i've been playing...

house of the dead series WII
Left 4 dead 360
dead space extraction WII
Resident evil GC
resident evil 5 (co-op with a buddy of mine) 360
F.E.A.R. 360

When i hit a roadblock with resident evil (as i always do) and get through DS extraction (trying to savor it) I have a couple of games 'on deck.'

Another playthrough of dead space 360
The thing PS2
Splatterhouse MAME
zombies ate my neighbors SNES
Maybe some castlevania SOTN if i have time before halloween.

Any of you guys playing horror games all month long? Any other suggestions for me to try out? I was thinking of hitting ebay and maybe trying to find a copy of D for the saturn.

Just finished getting 100% trophies for Deadspace. Awesome game. I have Silent Hill 4, and origins to get through, as well as the entire fatal frame series. I think I'll try to finish a few of them this month. Maybe spend halloween playing through fatal frame with some friends.
Also curious about The Thing. I've heard it's pretty good and I've seen a few intriguing videos on youtube that made a game out of the fear mechanic and your "squad"? There are always a couple of xbox copies for like 5 bucks at a local pawnshop.

I am playing Dead Rising for the first time and might play some RE as part of the together retro stuff, but I have a big backlog I am trying to work through right now...

I will make a point to watch around a dozen horror movies or so this month. I really don't care for Halloween (or many other holidays!), but I do like that it gives me an excuse to focus on a genre that I really like and to find other people that normally shun it (like my wife) who are willing to give it a go in the spirit of the season.

Halloween is my second favorite holiday, I already have the house decorated. I'll probably play RE 4 and Eternal Darkness:Sanity's Requiem.

But October is equally important for baseball. I'll be playing lots of MVP 2005 on the PC.

If you haven't played it, I suggest the original "Alone in the Dark."

I mostly only watch horror films to begin with. :)

But gamewise I'd recommend--

A Nightmare On Elm Street (NES)
Friday The 13th (NES)
Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Grafiti (NES)

Evil Dead(s) (various)

and to the poster who mentioned The Thing, I have played the PS2 version. Good RE-style clone based on a great film. The concept of "trust" within your team is very innovative and tense.

Eternal Darkness for the "crube".
Nightmare creatures two DC
D-2 DC
Pretty much any Evil Dead game
Batman:Dark tomorrow on xbox

edit* Shame on me, I forgot Doom3, preferably on the PC.

You would seriously recommend these? Are you trying to traumatize the guy on purpose?

yes I would. No I'm not -- I grew up on both of these. In fact (and I've said this SO many times on this board already), A Nightmare On Elm Street is one of my favorite games of all time.

I've actually never played Nightmare, but I did play a lot of 13th when I got it as a kid. It's a frustrating game, and the woods/caverns are just confusing. For me, a big 13th fan, I was really let down. I guess since you can get roms for free, people can check it out without having to pay for it. I could never recommend buying 13th to anyone but an enemy.

Diff'rent strokes.
